Following Memorial Day, the weather transitions from a pleasant, cool breeze to hot and highly humid conditions. As June arrives, our thoughts turn to upcoming celebrations such as Father’s Day and Juneteenth.

Let’s explore an outstanding venue renowned for its extensive Juneteenth celebrations. During my research, I came across a blog by The Post & Courier – South Carolina titled “Bringing J.O.Y.: Celebrating Juneteenth at the International African American Museum.”

As I write this, I can remember a story I wrote last summer about Juneteenth, and how I didn’t really get it until I was in Kansas City,MO, so many years ago and they were at 18th and Vine really having a great time.

Here is the story from Pamela Jouan

Every June, families across the country gather to celebrate Juneteenth — the holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when news of emancipation finally reached the last of the enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

In Charleston, the International African American Museum continues that tradition with one of the city’s most meaningful community events: J.O.Y., which is short for Juneteenth on the Yard.

Now in its third year, the annual celebration has quickly become an anchor event, blending history, culture, music, food, and family-friendly activities into a day designed to honor Black freedom while creating space for connection and celebration.

“Since its inception, J.O.Y. has grown into the International African American Museum’s signature annual celebration,” says Brandon Reid, IAAM’s public historian. “This year’s program is centered on our 2026 anniversary theme, ‘Soul(Food) of Freedom,’ weaving together a day of remembrance and celebration through music, storytelling, and collective joy.”

Taking place on June 19, the free event invites families to explore the museum while also enjoying outdoor experiences designed for all ages. Complimentary museum admission will be offered throughout the day, though guests are encouraged to pre-register for timed-entry tickets online ahead of time.

Last year’s attendance underscored just how popular the event has become. According to Reid, more than 4,400 guests visited the museum and outdoor festivities throughout the day — a record-breaking number for the institution.

“Pre-registering is the ideal way to avoid long wait times and ensure your family can experience the indoor exhibitions comfortably,” Reid explains. While walk-up visitors will still be accepted based on capacity, advance registration guarantees a smoother experience for families hoping to tour the galleries.

For parents looking for meaningful ways to introduce children to African American history and culture, J.O.Y. offers an approachable and engaging environment. The museum’s African Ancestors Memorial Garden will transform into an interactive community space filled with music, movement, storytelling, and hands-on activities.

One of the highlights for younger visitors is the Ubuntu Village, a dedicated family area inspired by the philosophy “I am because we are.” Children can participate in cultural crafts and interactive activities designed to spark curiosity while helping them better understand the history and significance of Juneteenth.

Families can also stop by “Visions of J.O.Y.,” a live photography station where guests can capture photos together and see their images displayed in real time across the museum’s outdoor digital screens.

“This is a vibrant space for individuals of all ages and backgrounds to experience joy,” Reid says.
