It breaks my heart to read about young talents, with promising careers suddenly plummett into despair. I just learned that Former LSU football player Kyren Lacy has died, from what sources are saying was suicide. This is stemming from a fatal hit and run, and him being charged for the crime.
It made so sad and broken, that I took to Facebook to express my grief, the young man was only 24. It’s really unfortunate to see a 24-year-old with an agent. What’s the point of having an agent if they can’t provide support during such a difficult time? This young man clearly needed counseling to help him cope with the pain and guilt of his actions.
Yes, he was facing jail time, but it would have been beneficial for him to have someone to help him navigate the emotional consequences. Where were his mom, dad, girlfriend, best friends, or grandmother during all of this?
My aim here is to help people acknowledge the reality of mental illness. You might be living a stable and focused life, but sometimes a single unfortunate mistake can alter everything in an instant.
What could have motivated this young man to drive so recklessly, resulting in the tragic death of an elderly man? What thoughts were racing through his mind at that moment? I guess we will never know.
This is a a report from Louisiana State Police, made to the public:
The investigation revealed that the crash occurred as a 2023 Dodge Charger was traveling south on LA Hwy 20. The driver of the Dodge, later identified as 24-year-old Kyren Lacy of Thibodaux, recklessly passed multiple vehicles at a high rate of speed by crossing the centerline and entering the northbound lane while in a designated No-Passing Zone.
As Lacy was illegally passing the other vehicles, the driver of a northbound pickup truck abruptly braked and swerved to the right to avoid a head-on collision with the approaching Dodge. Traveling behind the pickup was a 2017 Kia Cadenza whose driver swerved left to avoid the on coming Dodge Charger.
As the Kia Cadenza took evasive action to avoid impact with the Dodge, it crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a southbound 2017 Kia Sorento. Following the crash, Lacy drove around the crash scene and fled south on LA Hwy 20 without stopping to render aid, call emergency services, or report his involvement in the crash.
Troop C was later notified that Hall, who was a passenger in the Kia Sorrento, succumbed to his injuries from the crash after being transported to a hospital for treatment.
Louisiana State Police have confirmed that they are in communication with Lacy and his legal representatives regarding the receiver’s plans to turn himself in.
More:
Just recently, Lacy announced his intention to enter the 2025 NFL Draft on December 19, just two days following the crash, and opted not to participate in LSU’s Texas Bowl victory over Baylor.
Lacy played three seasons at LSU after beginning his college career at Louisiana. He had a standout performance over the last two seasons, recording 30 receptions for 558 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023. In 2024, he tallied 58 catches for 866 yards and nine touchdowns, finishing as LSU’s second-leading wide receiver in yardage and leading the team in touchdown receptions.
In closing, it’s important to try to understand the perspective of this 24-year-old Black man. He made a mistake and attempted to take responsibility for it. In my view, he may have been subjected to harassment due to his race, which led to a state of panic.
Because he had a bright future ahead of him, but perhaps he felt overwhelmed and unable to cope, unlike many others in similar situations. It’s truly heartbreaking to think that he may not have had anyone to turn to, especially if this was a case of suicide.
Please keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they prepare for his burial, along with all the victims and their loved ones. This is not the news I wanted to wake up to.
