I was just browsing Twitter, minding my own business and checking out some stories while updating my posts, when I stumbled upon a bunch of influencers lamenting the potential TikTok ban in the US. They seem genuinely upset about it. Meanwhile, there’s talk of President Donald Trump possibly using his executive order to intervene and keep it running. Honestly, I’ll just hold my breath and feign concern, one way or the other.

To be frank, I’ve only visited TikTok a few times and didn’t find it appealing. I’m especially uncomfortable with the fact that it allows kids as young as 12 to interact with adults and engage with some pretty questionable content.

Check out what is being reported as we speak!

Update on Tik Tok ban

The TikTok ban in the U.S. has recently taken effect. The Supreme Court upheld the ban on Friday, and TikTok subsequently made the app unavailable to U.S. users. Users who try to access the app now see a pop-up message saying that TikTok is “temporarily unavailable” and that the company is working to resolve the issue.

President-elect Donald Trump has announced that he will likely issue an executive order giving TikTok a 90-day reprieve to find a solution. This means that TikTok might be reinstated if a viable solution is found within that timeframe.

Some TikTok creators are already shifting their focus to other platforms like Instagram Reels in anticipation of a prolonged ban.

Who is responsible for the ban?

The TikTok ban was enacted through a law passed by a bipartisan majority in Congress last year. The law, known as the Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act, was signed into law by President Joe Biden. The law requires TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to either sell its stake in TikTok to a U.S. company or face a ban in the U.S.

The Supreme Court upheld this law, and TikTok voluntarily shut down its service in the U.S. before the ban took effect.

President-elect Donald Trump took to Truth Social app with this statement:

I’m asking companies not to let TikTok stay dark! I will issue an executive order on Monday to extend the time before the law’s prohibitions take effect so that we can make a deal to protect our national security. The order will also confirm that there will be no liability for any company that helped keep TikTok from going dark before my order.

Americans deserve to see our exciting Inauguration on Monday, as well as other events and conversations.

I would like the United States to have a 50% ownership position in a joint venture. By doing this, we would save TikTok, keep it in good hands, and allow it to grow. Without U.S. approval, there is no TikTok. With our approval, it is worth hundreds of billions of dollars—maybe trillions. Read more!

Regardless of the twists and turns of this chaotic drama, I hope we can focus more on significant issues as our new President is inaugurated tomorrow, coinciding with Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.
