One of my favorite heavyweight boxing legends, George Foreman, has passed away at the age of 76. Years ago, I dreamed of becoming a boxing promoter like the legendary Don King, and George was one of the fighters I aspired to work with. Sadly, George passed away on March 21, 2025.
Now, let’s take a moment to reflect on his extraordinary life and career.
George Foreman, born on January 10, 1949, in Marshall, Texas. He is celebrated as both a formidable heavyweight boxing champion and a successful entrepreneur.Raised in Houston’s Fifth Ward, he overcame a difficult childhood and found a path to success through boxing.
Eventually, Foreman’s boxing career took off when he won a gold medal at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City. He turned professional shortly thereafter, and in 1973, he became the world heavyweight champion by defeating Joe Frazier. Known for his powerful punches and aggressive style, Foreman was a dominant force in the ring.
In one of boxing’s most famous matches, the 1974 “Rumble in the Jungle,” he lost his title to Muhammad Ali. Following a surprising retirement in 1977, Foreman became an ordained minister.
In 1987, Foreman made a remarkable comeback to boxing and in 1994, at the age of 45, he regained the heavyweight championship by defeating Michael Moorer, making him the oldest fighter to win the title.
Outside the ring, Foreman became a successful businessman, most notably with the George Foreman Grill, which sold millions of units worldwide.
In addition, George also appeared in various TV roles, including an appearance on “Sanford and Son,” showcasing his charisma and popularity beyond sports. Throughout his life, George Foreman was admired for his resilience, transformation, and contributions both in and out of the boxing ring.
As of the latest updates, George Foreman is survived by his large family, which includes his wife, Mary Joan Martelly, and their children. Foreman had a total of 12 children, five sons and seven daughters.
His sons are famously named George Jr., George III, George IV, George V, and George VI, while his daughters include Michi, Freeda, Georgetta, Natalie, Leola, Isabella, and Courtney. He leaves behind a legacy of both family devotion and professional achievement.
