KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) — The nonprofit, ScrapsKC is helping teachers for another school year with its Teacher Resource Center.
“Paying for supplies out of their own pocket is not something we want teachers to do. As a former teacher I remember buying a lot of my supplies so this was a real passion for us to be able to provide supplies for teachers to use in their classroom,” said ScrapsKC Founder and Executive Director, Brenda Mott.
The Teacher Resource Center opens every quarter and provides free school supplies to eligible teachers after they apply and pay a $35 membership fee.
Once they get in, all the supplies are theirs to choose from.
“We want to be able to let all of those children have the same playing field as anybody who can afford supplies. This way if a child suffers something traumatic the evening before they’ve been evicted and had to leave quickly and not be able to bring those supplies with them, the teacher is going to be able to have those supplies,” said Mott.
It’s a big help for teachers who are trying to make learning enjoyable while on a budget.
“Probably $800 900 dollars a year so this place is really great it helps cut that down,” said Maple Park Middle School 7th and 8th Grade Special Education ELA Teacher, Stacey Parsons.
t’s for any teacher in Platte, Clay, Jackson, Cass, Johnson, and Wyandotte counties.
“I think it is amazing it just gives us an opportunity to get a few things that maybe our budget doesn’t allow just supplies for kids that maybe don’t have the opportunity to get the supplies that maybe other kids do,” said Platte County School District Art Teacher, Cindi Louderback. She added, “We want to give the kids the opportunity to do those fun activities that cost more than people realize. Paper alone construction paper is usually where I spend most of my budget, providing that good paper for them to draw, watercolor on.”
They are open for seven weeks at a time.
