In 2021. it was a difficult Mother’s Day for me. My first cousins in Mississippi lost their mom, and we all mourned the loss of my late grandmother’s third oldest daughter—the woman who was the social glue of our family.

My aunt was the one who kept everyone connected, aware of what was happening in our family. She was like an operator, ensuring my mom in St. Louis, MO, stayed informed about family news and condolences. Her passing from cancer left a void in our hearts, especially as Mother’s Day approaches and I realize there’s no one left to bridge my elder parent with the current family gossip and updates from Mississippi.

My mom still has siblings, nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, but my aunt was the “Mother of Sociability”—the one who kept our family connected. A mother’s love goes beyond biological ties; it’s about caring for someone’s well-being, feeling their emotions, and making sure they’re taken care of.

Last week (2022), I heard about a young man, apparently quite troubled (based on his mugshot), who tragically killed his mother because she wanted him out of her house. It wasn’t that she was a bad mother; she sensed her son was heading down a destructive path and chose to prioritize her love for him by asking him to leave, rather than watching him self-destruct. A mother’s love often means doing what’s difficult to protect her child.

Similarly, our mothers’ love is unconditional. For example, nearly 50 years ago, my older cousin announced he was gay to his mother. She was uncomfortable with his revelation and asked him to leave her home—not because she didn’t love him, but because she couldn’t accept his choices at that time. Our family believes it’s better to be openly true to oneself, trusting that eventually, love and understanding will grow.

Mothers matter deeply, regardless of their stubbornness, disagreements, or differences. The woman who carried you for nine months—or less—bore you out of love and care. We are here because of her, and we thank God for that.

Many in my life have lost their mothers, and today, I honor their memory just as I cherish my own. It can be painful, but reflecting on those precious moments and memories brings comfort. As someone who was spoiled by my mom, I’m not ready to let her go, and I empathize deeply with those who feel the same.

On the eve of Mother’s Day, we pause to reflect on the women who have touched our lives most. Stores will be filled with flowers, candies, and cards, ready to celebrate the women we cherish—whether they are wives, sisters, daughters, friends, stepmothers, mothers-in-law, nieces, or moms-to-be.
