At just 21 years old, Kayla Austin, a Chicagoland native, is making waves in the tech and safety industry with her groundbreaking invention designed to protect children from gun violence. Her patent-pending technology, “My Gun’s Been Moved,” provides responsible gun owners with 24/7 monitoring and notifications if their firearms have been moved. This innovative tool is poised to enhance the safety of children and communities nationwide. Additionally, Kayla has developed “My Safety Circle,” a comprehensive initiative to promote responsible gun ownership, monitoring, and storage in homes.

Kayla’s journey began at the tender age of 12 when she was inspired to create this life-saving product. Participation in a youth program, hearing a family member’s story, and watching news reports on gun violence in Chicago ignited a passion within her to make a difference. Driven by sleepless nights and a desire to use technology for better gun safety, Kayla dived deep into gun safety education and community activism. Her dedication has not gone unnoticed, earning her recognition from the State of Illinois and Congress.

Kayla’s achievements are impressive. In 2022, she was named one of Teen Vogue’s “21 Under 21” for her advocacy in youth gun safety, recognized by AT&T’s Dream in Black Future Dream Makers, and honored as one of the National Urban League’s Future History Makers. Her most notable accomplishment came when she pitched her idea at Pharrell Williams’ Mighty Dream Forum and Black Ambition, winning $25,000. This victory allowed her to showcase “My Gun’s Been Moved” at the prestigious Consumer Technology Association’s CES Conference, the world’s most influential tech event, highlighting breakthrough technologies and global innovation.

Her recognition at CES helped launch WeFunder and GoFundMe campaigns, supporting the development and expansion of her product. “According to the Brady Campaign, in 2023, an average of 23 children and teens under the age of 17 were shot each day in the United States,” said Kayla Austin, CEO and Founder. “Guns now kill more children and adolescents than any other cause. I am excited to share how ‘My Gun’s Been Moved’ and My Safety Circle can be a part of the solution.”

With the support of her family, Kayla’s relentless efforts have led to the growth of “My Gun’s Been Moved,” which now boasts 35 student brand ambassadors. Her “My Safety Circle” initiative educates and advocates for the safety of children and communities by promoting responsible gun ownership, monitoring, and storage.

Kayla Austin’s story is a nod to the power of youth-driven innovation and community activism. As a Howard University student, she continues to push the boundaries of technology to create safer environments for future generations. Her work not only addresses a critical issue but also inspires others to pursue solutions that make a tangible impact on society.
