The Las Vegas Aces are looking to win their third consecutive championship, and with the playoffs beginning soon, the Aces are looking to end the season on the right note. And in their last game, their star player made history.
Aces star A’ja Wilson accomplished something special in the Aces’ win over the Connecticut Sun. Wilson finished the game with 29 points and nine rebounds. What made this game special was that coming into the game, Wilson needed 18 points to reach a special milestone. If she scored 18 or more, Wilson would become the first player in WNBA history to score 1,000 points in a single season. And she did just that.
Wilson’s 100th point happened in the fourth quarter with 1 minute, 57 seconds left. She knocked down a jumper, and as she ran down to the other end of the court, the crowd and her teammates celebrated her accomplishment.
Wilson is the frontrunner for the Most Valuable Player (MVP) award this season, as she averages 27.0 points, 12.0 rebounds, 2.6 blocks and 1.8 steals. Wilson has been consistent throughout the season, and even had big games like her 42-point game against the Dallas Wings and her 41-point game against the Phoenix Mercury shortly after.
Last season, Wilson finished third in the MVP race. Breanna Stewart of the New York Liberty won the award, and Alyssa Thomas of the Sun finished in second. This year’s race is somewhat clearer than last season’s.
Wilson and the Aces have two more regular season games. They face the Seattle Storm and the Dallas Wings. The Aces are currently fourth in the league, and could potentially reach the third spot. Connecticut currently holds the third spot, and the New York Liberty and the Minnesota Lynx hold the first and second spots respectively. The Aces have had some ups and downs this season, but once the playoffs begin, they are a step closer to potentially winning another championship. Can Wilson and the Aces get another ring?
