Pope Francis passed away at the age of 88 due to a cerebral stroke and irreversible heart failure, according to the Vatican’s chief medical officer. Dr. Andrea Arcangeli stated that the stroke caused him to fall into a coma, followed by “irreversible cardiocirculatory collapse,” as reported by various news outlets. Francis died on Monday morning at 7:35 a.m. at the Casa Santa Marta guesthouse within the Vatican, where he resided.
In a statement, Arcangeli noted that Francis also experienced episodes of respiratory insufficiency and had a history of bilateral pneumonia, along with type 2 diabetes and hypertension.
Recently, Francis spent over a month hospitalized due to double pneumonia. Despite his illness, he made a remarkable recovery and, on Easter Sunday, appeared in public to bless the thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square and surprised many with a ride in the popemobile through the piazza.
This event marked his final public appearance before his passing.
Here is a little about this remarkably blessed man:
Pope Francis, born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on December 17, 1936, in Buenos Aires, Argentina, is the 266th and current pope of the Roman Catholic Church. He was elected pope on March 13, 2013, succeeding Pope Benedict XVI.
Known for his humility, emphasis on social justice, and commitment to the poor, Pope Francis is the first pope from the Americas and the first Jesuit pope in history. His papacy has focused on issues such as environmental sustainability, compassion for migrants and refugees, and reforming church practices to better serve its followers worldwide.
Rest in Peace, from The Narrative Matters.
