St. Louis has endured significant challenges over the decades, experiencing a population decline similar to a troubled marriage. Yet, those who have left simply crossed the border into the neighboring county.
The county of St. Louis, if you will. When asked where theyāre from, people across the metro area rarely say Ferguson, Wellston, or Claytonāthey respond with āSt. Louis.ā Because, even after losing nearly 400,000 residents over more than 50 years, the cityās name remains the defining perimeter.
This is a city that impresses along the Mississippi River to the east and features sprawling suburbs to the west, where the Missouri River flows. A powerful symbol that captures St. Louis’ unique charm is the world-famous Gateway Arch.
Standing 630 feet tall, the Gateway Arch symbolizes that St. Louis stands apart, a city in a league of its own. Interestingly, the city limits of St. Louis are smaller than those of its western neighbor, Kansas City. Yet, St. Louis boasts the largest media market and the most significant metropolitan center in Missouri. Its metropolitan statistical area ranks 22nd in the United States. Many residents prefer living in the suburbs of West St. Louis County rather than in the city proper.
And let’s not forget the renowned, world-class Zoo, located within Forest Parkāthe largest urban park in the U.S. Forest Park also hosted Missouriās only Worldās Fair in 1904.
While St. Louis may no longer hold the title of the most dangerous city, itās wise to stay cautious as you explore what this vibrant city has to offer.
How to stay safe while a tourist:

- Know your location at all times; don’t rely solely on GPSāuse common sense and awareness.
- Avoid sitting in your car after 2 a.m., as criminals are more active at night.
- If you recognize yourself as a potential targetāsuch as females, elders, or individuals who appear vulnerableābe cautious around undesirable areas downtown or near your hotel. Greet briefly and move on. Avoid using lighters, cell phones, or handing out coins in such situations.
- Keep your valuable belongings, like bulky iPhones or jewelry, out of sight. Use your phone discreetly and then put it away.
- Store jewelry securely in your hotel safe. Avoid flashing valuables when walking downtown St. Louis.
- In the event of a car accident, stay inside your vehicle and call 911.
- Be cautious around panhandlers and unhoused individuals; they are not necessarily friends or charity cases. Always exercise caution when giving money or engaging in conversation, especially downtown. Stay safe!
Don’t be walking around trying to get scammed or car jacked inquiring about drugs.
One final tip: travel with your group and avoid acting like Curious George by venturing out alone. Most criminals across the country tend to target individuals who are alone and unfamiliar with their surroundings. Stay safe by sticking together.
