Michael Vick, widely regarded as one of the most dynamic quarterbacks in NFL history, has been named the next head coach at Norfolk State University, according to multiple reports. Vick, 44, will take over the program following the departure of Dawson Odums, who left with a 15-31 record in four seasons.
This marks Vick’s first formal coaching role, but the Newport News, Virginia native is no stranger to leadership on the field. âI know how to lead, and I know what it takes,â he stated in a recent interview with The Virginian-Pilot.
Vick’s football pedigree is undeniable. After a standout career at Virginia Tech, where he led the Hokies to the BCS National Championship Game in 2000 and placed sixth in the Heisman Trophy voting, he was drafted first overall by the Atlanta Falcons in 2001. Across 13 NFL seasons with the Falcons, Eagles, Jets, and Steelers, Vick revolutionized the quarterback position with his unmatched rushing ability. His 6,109 rushing yards remain the most by a quarterback in NFL history.
However, Vick’s career was not without controversy. He served 21 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to involvement in a dog fighting ring in 2007. Following his release, he returned to the NFL, winning Comeback Player of the Year in 2010 after leading the Philadelphia Eagles to a division title. He retired in 2016 and has since worked as an NFL analyst for Fox Sports.
Vick’s hiring places him among a growing list of former NFL stars at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs), following figures like Deion Sanders at Jackson State and Eddie George at Tennessee State. Norfolk State and its community now look forward to Vickâs leadership to reinvigorate their football program.
Norfolk State University has made headlines by appointing former NFL quarterback Michael Vick as the new head coach for their football program. This groundbreaking decision marks Vick’s significant transition from his illustrious playing career into a prominent educational leadership role. His appointment is drawing attention from sports enthusiasts and university communities alike, eager to witness how his expertise and charisma will rejuvenate Norfolk State’s football team.
Vick is anticipated to bring a fresh perspective to the team, drawing on his professional NFL experience and strong understanding of the game. With an eye on nurturing talent and promoting sportsmanship, the university is confident that Vick’s leadership will pave the way for new successes and foster a culture of excellence within the football program. His role as head coach signifies a monumental shift in the schoolâs commitment to elevating its athletic achievements and shaping future athletes.
