Russell Westbrook Looks To Build Affordable Housing In His Hometown of Los Angeles

NBA star Russell Westbrook is using his platform for good, as he plans to build affordable housing in his hometown of Los Angeles to help low-income families.

One of the greatest point guards of all time is giving back to his hometown.

The Los Angeles Clippers point guard, Russell Westbrook, joined Evermont, a project to build 180 affordable housing units in South Los Angeles, according to FOX 11.

Anchored by Target, the housing development plans to build on a site where the Los Angeles riots transpired after the cops were acquitted after brutally beating Rodney King back in 1992.

Not only will the project have affordable housing for seniors and families, but the Westbrook-backed project will also have a SEED school as well as “community-centered businesses,” according to the details. “The main purpose and the mission of the movement is “to play a role in shifting the narrative of South-Central Los Angeles by leading with civil and community engagement.”

Westbrook founded the Russell Westbrook Why Not? Foundation back in 2012, according to the website.

His foundation is dedicated to inspiring the lives of children, empowering them to ask “Why not? and teaching them to never give up,” according to the website.

Since 2012, Westbrook has invested in Los Angeles where he grew up, teaming up with the organization LeadersUp that provides his community access to health services, job training and educational services, according to AFROTECH.

“Being from the inner city, I understand the resources, access, and opportunities that are needed for young people,” said Westbrook, in a press release. “It’s a privilege to be able to help the South L.A. community and beyond, whether it’s through education or job creation.”

Jeffery Wallace, the LeadersUp President, said he commends Westbrook and his community ambition.

Drafted in 2008 by the Oklahoma City Thunder, Westbrook earned the MVP in 2017. He’s the only player in NBA history to average a triple-double in three straight seasons.
