Winter Storm Blair is sweeping across the U.S., bringing heavy snow, ice, and freezing temperatures. It’s crucial to stay prepared to protect yourself and your loved ones. Below are essential tips to help you safely weather the storm.

Protect Yourself from Frostbite and Hypothermia

Low temperatures and wind chills can quickly lead to frostbite or hypothermia. Prevent this by dressing in layers, including warm boots, hats, gloves, and scarves. If you experience numbness or pain in extremities like fingers, toes, or ears, seek warmth immediately. Run the affected areas under warm water and, if necessary, visit a healthcare provider.

Take breaks during outdoor activities, like snow shoveling, to avoid overexertion and associated risks such as heart attacks or hypothermia, which can occur even if you don’t feel cold.

Prepare Your Home for Power Outages

Stay informed by following local emergency management agencies and the Red Cross. Equip your home with an emergency kit, including the following essentials:

  • Three days’ worth of food and water
  • Medications for at least three days
  • Flashlights, extra batteries, and a weather radio
  • Blankets and warm clothing

If the power goes out:

  1. Gather in one room, ideally in the center of your home, away from windows, to conserve heat.
  2. Use blankets to insulate windows and doors.
  3. Avoid using ovens or non-fireplace fires for heat to prevent house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Drive Only If Necessary

Winter roads are hazardous, with icy and snowy conditions causing over 1,300 fatalities annually. If driving is unavoidable, equip your car with snow tires or chains and stock an emergency kit containing blankets, snacks, water, hand warmers, and an ice scraper.

In case you get stranded, use cat litter or sand to improve traction and tie a brightly colored ribbon to your antenna to signal for help. Stay inside your vehicle to conserve body heat and wait for assistance.

By taking these precautions, you can keep yourself and your loved ones safe during Winter Storm Blair. Stay warm, prepared, and vigilant.
