Affinia Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program: Ferguson Health Center to Host New Residency Program with $150K Grant
The Affinia Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program is poised to significantly expand its community impact. This development comes after receiving a major $150,000 grant from the St. Louis County Port Authority. Affinia Healthcare was one of just 38 nonprofit organizations chosen for this support. The grant comes from the Port Authorityâs Community Investment Fund.
Ultimately, this vital funding will support the new residency program, which is scheduled to launch in June 2026. The program will be based at the organization’s Ferguson, MO, location. This investment also marks a crucial step in strengthening local health services and fostering the next generation of medical professionals in the St. Louis region.
Supporting Community Health Through Strategic Investment
The $150,000 grant will directly fund necessary renovations at the Ferguson Health Center. According to Yvonne Buhlinger, Vice President of Development and Community Relations at Affinia Healthcare, these funds are essential. They will help create the infrastructure required to host the residency program. “This award will go towards the remodeling of our Ferguson Health Center building to house the Family Medicine Residency Program,” she explained. Furthermore, she noted it will provide “dedicated space for the Residents, as required for accreditation.”
The St. Louis County Port Authorityâs Community Investment Fund specifically backs projects that promise significant economic and community development. Ambassador Kevin F. OâMalley, chair of the Port Authority, emphasized the great potential of the chosen organizations. He stated, âWe felt that they had great potential to help make our St. Louis region a better place to work and live.â As a result, the Port Authority hopes these investments will generate new opportunities and boost the regional economy.
Building a Pipeline of Skilled Medical Providers
Earlier this year, the Affinia Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program achieved a major milestone. It received full accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). This accreditation gave the program the green light to begin recruiting physicians for its first class.
The response from prospective residents was overwhelmingly positive. For instance, Dr. Kenneth Hemba, the Family Medicine Residency Program Director, shared impressive figures from the recruitment process. “We received over one thousand applications and will be completing 94 interviews for our four slots,” he said. This high level of interest certainly underscores the program’s appeal and its recognized potential.
Dr. Hemba also highlighted the program’s dual mission. It aims to expand immediate access to healthcare while also creating a lasting impact on the community. “We know the Program will not only expand access to care but also builds a sustainable pipeline of highly competent providers committed to health access and long-term impact,” he added.
The Broader Impact on St. Louis
Investing in medical residency programs like this one is a proven strategy. It effectively addresses physician shortages and improves health outcomes in underserved communities. By training doctors within the community they will serve, programs like Affinia Healthcare’s increase the likelihood that these professionals will remain in the area long-term. In turn, this creates a stable, accessible healthcare environment for residents.
This development also aligns with broader efforts to enhance the region’s economic and social fabric. As leaders focus on making St. Louis a better place to live and work, initiatives that strengthen essential services like healthcare are paramount.
Looking Ahead
With funding secured and recruitment underway, the Affinia Healthcare Family Medicine Residency Program is on track for its 2026 launch. This grant not only facilitates the physical construction of a training facility but also builds a foundation for a healthier future for the St. Louis community.
