Empowering Detroit through Community Initiatives to End Hunger

Washington, D.C. / USA – June 8, 2019: The Capital Pride Parade takes place every year on a Saturday in June between Dupont Circle and Logan Circle.

Since 2018, we have facilitated the donation of an estimated 35,780 pounds of food to those in need.

Detroit has a poverty rate nearly three times higher than the national average—roughly 35%. In Detroit, the child poverty rate is even higher, at greater than 50%. We hope that we can fight food and hygiene insecurity by facilitating supplies to those in need.

Our Mission

We strive to fight food insecurity and the stigma around it through the use of Blessing Boxes. Sustained through community donations of food, and available to anyone in need, Blessing Boxes are passive and local systems through which people can get access to basic needs.

Many food banks in the United States have restricted hours of operation making it difficult for people in need to receive help if they work day jobs. A blessing box is open 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. This allows those in need and donors to come at times that work for them. Another major issue for people in need is transportation to services that can help them. The goal of Blessing Box Global is to set up boxes in local communities so that they can support local people in need. This will allow people in need to receive help without having to worry about the logistical burden of reaching a food bank.

The Blessing Box also works to remove the social pressure of receiving help. Many times people in need can feel stigmatized when asking for help. Anyone in need can go to the box and take whatever they require, with no one there to judge.

Smarter Solution to Combat Food and Hygiene Insecurity

At Blessing Box Global we are striving to fight food insecurity through the use of blessing boxes. Sustained through community donations, and available to anyone in need, blessing boxes are passive local systems through which people can get access to basic needs.
