Flying Home for the Holidays: Music at Kansas City International Airport

Travelers arriving at Kansas City International Airport this December are in for a special treat. The Kansas City Aviation Department (KCAD) and Creative City KC have teamed up to fill the air with festive sounds. Specifically, this new program is titled “Flying Home for the Holidays.” It offers a warm, musical welcome to residents and visitors alike. Furthermore, it showcases the city’s rich cultural heritage as soon as passengers step off the plane.

This holiday music pop-up acts as a thoughtful collaboration designed to spread cheer. Consequently, the program involves Creative City KC, the Aviation Department, and Councilwoman Melissa Robinson. Starting December 11th, the baggage claim area near the Arrivals information desk will transform into a performance space. As a result, travelers will get a unique first impression of Kansas City’s vibrant arts scene.

A Kansas City Twist on Holiday Classics

Notably, each musical group featured in the series will perform beloved holiday classics with a distinct local flavor. This means they will incorporate the city’s storied history of Jazz and Swing music into every tune. Therefore, it is a wonderful way to celebrate the season. It also pays tribute to the unique rhythm that makes Kansas City special.

“As a lifelong advocate for our rich musical heritage, I am thrilled to see the Kansas City Aviation Department and Creative City KC unite to bring our vibrant jazz tradition to the airport,” said Councilwoman Melissa Robinson. “This exciting program… not only showcases the immense talent of our local artists but also embodies the warm spirit of our community.”

Welcoming Travelers at MCI Airport Kansas City

The goal of the “Flying Home for the Holidays” program is simple. Organizers want to make every traveler’s arrival a little brighter. Whether you are returning home to family or visiting for the first time, the live music provides an immediate connection. Thus, it serves as a welcoming gesture that goes beyond standard airport greetings.

“Creative City KC is excited to share the sounds of Kansas City musicians at the airport,” said Jake Wagner, Co-Founder of Creative City KC. “Welcoming visitors and residents alike with music is a great way to welcome everyone home to KC.” Additionally, the performances are located in the baggage claim area. This ensures that those waiting for their luggage can enjoy the full experience.

Performance Schedule

The music kicks off this week and continues on Thursdays throughout December. Moreover, a new trio will be featured each week. Be sure to catch a performance if your travel plans align.

  • December 11: Desmond Mason Trio
  • December 18: Ezgi Karakus Trio
  • December 23: Peter Schlamb Trio
  • December 30: The Ward Trio

Kansas City: A UNESCO City of Music

Significantly, this initiative highlights Kansas City’s prestigious status as a UNESCO Creative City. In fact, Kansas City is the only city in the United States to be designated a “City of Music.” This recognition honors the city’s deep musical roots. Furthermore, it celebrates its ongoing contributions to the global music landscape. Initiatives like this holiday music series are a perfect example of how the city lives up to this title. Ultimately, they integrate music into the fabric of daily life.

A Festive Welcome Awaits

The “Flying Home for the Holidays” program is more than just entertainment. On the contrary, it is a celebration of Kansas City’s identity. By bringing live jazz to the airport, KCAD and Creative City KC are creating a warm atmosphere. This will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression on travelers. If you find yourself at the airport this holiday season, take a moment to enjoy the festive sounds. After all, they help make Kansas City truly unique.
