Life Beyond Prostate Cancer: George Craft’s Inspiring Journey
The sound of a war cry is powerful. It can unite soldiers on a battlefield or rally a team to victory. For the men of The Empowerment Network (TEN), it is a declaration of resilience against prostate cancer. This rallying shout, “We Survive, and We Thrive,” captures the essence of a full and rich life beyond prostate cancer, a concept championed by survivor George Craft. His journey and advocacy have become a source of strength for many, proving that a diagnosis is not an end but a new beginning.
George’s story is a powerful testament to the importance of community, self-advocacy, and finding new purpose after a cancer diagnosis. As the Outreach Coordinator for TEN, he has transformed his personal battle into a public mission, encouraging men everywhere to take charge of their health and embrace the vibrant life that awaits them after treatment.
George’s Journey with Prostate Cancer
George Craft’s path began with a diagnosis in June 2022. Initially, the cancer was low-grade, and his urologist recommended active surveillance. This approach involves closely monitoring the cancer rather than immediate aggressive treatment. However, a change in his medical team led to a new perspective.
In April 2023, a biopsy performed by a new urologist revealed that the cancer had become more aggressive. Faced with this new information, George had to make a critical decision between radiation and surgery. He chose surgery, undergoing a prostatectomy in January 2024.
“After I had my surgery, I was a new me,” he recalls. The recovery process brought changes, and he leaned on the unwavering support of his wife, Courtney. “Things were different. The doctors told me my functions would not be the same as before.” This new reality is a common challenge for survivors, highlighting the need for a strong support system.
Finding Strength in Community
Just one month after his surgery, George found The Empowerment Network. A fellow member introduced him to the support group, and it was here that he found a community of men who understood his experience. The shared stories and collective strength of the group were comforting and educational.
“When I became a member of The Empowerment Network, I was able to talk to the brothers about their journeys, which helped me understand what to expect in my own,” George says. “It made me realize how precious life is.” This connection with other survivors was a turning point, providing him with the tools and emotional backing to navigate his recovery.
A New Mission: Advocating for a Life Beyond Prostate Cancer
George’s experience ignited a passion for advocacy. He took on the role of Outreach Coordinator for TEN, dedicating himself to spreading awareness and education. Alongside other survivors, he regularly attends community events and health fairs, sharing a simple but life-saving message: early detection is key.
Prostate cancer is highly treatable when caught in its early stages through a simple blood test. George’s work emphasizes this fact, urging men to be proactive about their health. He is also part of the Prayer Team, visiting men in the hospital to offer support and encouragement before their surgeries. “You have to touch someone,” he says. “And as prostate cancer survivors, you have to be an advocate for yourself.”
His powerful mantra, “We Survive, and We Thrive,” has become the official war cry for the MEN OF TEN. It’s more than just a slogan; it’s a mindset that reframes the narrative around survivorship. “We haven’t just survived; we’re not just living—we’re surviving and thriving,” George states emphatically.
Embracing Life with New Passion
George’s commitment to thriving extends beyond his advocacy work. A retired U.S. Army Master Sergeant with 27 years of service, he has always embraced challenges. Recently, he discovered a new passion: golf. Through the PGA HOPE (Helping Our Patriots Everywhere) program, he picked up the sport and found it both challenging and rewarding.
“I’ve come to love the game. It’s so challenging,” he shares. “The challenge is to myself—to stay consistent, to learn something new every time I play.” This new hobby is more than just a pastime; it’s a way to stay active and engaged, embodying his philosophy of living life to the fullest. He and Courtney, his wife of 27 years, also love to travel and are planning a cruise for next summer.
George Craft’s story is a powerful example of what a life beyond prostate cancer can look like. It is a life filled with purpose, community, and a deep appreciation for every moment. His war cry continues to inspire men to not only face their diagnosis with courage but to thrive in the journey that follows.
