Oraâs Story
âGod uses you to be His hands and feetâ
Like so many other single income households across the D.C. area, all it took to knock Oraâs family off their feet was one unexpected crisis.
âI was paralyzed from my waist down because of a stroke and had to have surgery on my back,â says Ora. She didnât know how she was going to care for her grandchildren while in the hospital, let alone during her recovery.
Ora reached out to her only source of helpâ Central Union Mission. Because of your generosity, she received everything she needed to make it through her crisis.
âWhen I was in the hospital, the Mission made sure me and my grandchildren were taken care of,â says Ora. âThey even brought home a brand new mattress for me to aid in my back recovery.â
YOU OPEN THE DOOR TO LASTING HOPE
For Ora, âlife gets vibrant againâ when she walks into Central Union Mission.
âComing here gives me a reason to get out of bed,â says Ora. âSome people think that the Mission is just about the food and shelter. But itâs so much more than that.â
The Comprehensive Family Resource Center is a one-stop place where Ora can receive care that doesnât just meet her immediate physical needs, but also puts her on the path to lasting stability.
âWhether it was job training, food for holidays, fellowship or clothing for the children, the Mission has always supplied my needs,â says Ora. âWhen I say the Mission gives to you abundantly, I mean it.â
About Mission DC
Central Union Mission is Washington, DCâs oldest private social service agency, dedicated to transforming lives and serving the community since its founding. Guided by our faith-based mission, we provide life-changing support to homeless men, families in poverty, at-risk children, veterans, and seniors. Through services like our emergency shelter (offering over 62,000 bed-nights annually), holistic transformation programs, food and clothing distribution, and addiction recovery support, we aim to meet the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of those we serve. Our dedicated efforts, alongside expert curation and Christ-centered compassion, help individuals overcome challenges and build independent, fulfilling lives.
We pride ourselves on transparency and excellence, with accolades like GuideStarâs Platinum Seal and the GreatNonprofits Top-Rated award affirming our impact. At Central Union Mission, every initiative, from hosting underprivileged children’s camps to workforce development for those in need, is rooted in our mission to glorify God by aiding the hurting in our community. With the unwavering support of generous donors, we continue to inspire transformation, foster discipleship, and ignite hope, one life at a time.
