Hidden Healers: A Celebration of Historical Black Figures in Medicine

Historical Black Figures: Dr. Solomon Carter Fuller was one of the earliest researchers to identify neuropathological changes associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Working at a time when dementia was poorly understood and often dismissed, Fuller conducted detailed microscopic studies of diseased brains and published findings that advanced modern neuropsychiatry.

He also introduced European neurological methods into American medical institutions. Despite his expertise, his contributions were minimized due to racial exclusion. Today, as dementia represents a growing public health crisis, Fuller’s early scientific groundwork remains integral to neurological research and diagnosis.
