Hidden Healers: A Celebration of Historical Black Figures in Medicine: How Dr. Herman Branson’s Alpha-Helix Model Revolutionized Science
Dr. Herman Branson made a groundbreaking contribution to molecular biology by co-developing the alpha-helix model of protein structure. This discovery, achieved alongside Linus Pauling and Robert Corey, transformed the scientific understanding of proteins. Moreover, it laid the foundation for advancements in drug development, biotechnology, and vaccine research.
The alpha-helix model is a key element in understanding how proteins function at the molecular level. Because of this, Branson’s work continues to influence biomedical science today.
His contributions not only advanced molecular biology but also highlighted the critical role of Black scientists in shaping modern science. Learn more about his work here.
