Hidden Healers: A Celebration of Historical Black Figures in Medicine: Jewel Plummer Cobb, Ph.D. (1924–2017)

This article celebrates the achievements of historical Black figures in medicine, specifically honoring Jewel Plummer Cobb, Ph.D. (1924–2017). Her work in oncology research laid a crucial foundation for modern cancer treatment.

Dr. Jewel Plummer Cobb made significant contributions through her influential research on how cancer cells behave and react to chemotherapy. Consequently, her findings helped shape the scientific basis of modern oncology.

Beyond her work in the lab, Dr. Cobb also worked to change academic medicine by creating more leadership roles for scientists from underrepresented groups.

Ultimately, her combined efforts in both cancer research and changing institutions helped to diversify biomedical science. This, in turn, strengthened the nation’s entire research community.
