Hidden Healers: A Celebration of Historical Black Figures in Medicine: Pioneering Public Health: William A. Hinton, M.D’s Legacy in Syphilis Diagnostics

William A. Hinton, M.D. changed the face of modern medicine. Specifically, he developed one of the most accurate early blood tests for syphilis. Before his work, testing was often unreliable. However, Dr. Hinton’s method greatly improved how doctors found the disease. As a result, his test reduced “false positives,” which occur when healthy people are incorrectly told they are sick.

This work was vital for several reasons. First, it made medical diagnoses more trustworthy. In addition, it helped patients avoid the harsh social judgment that came with sexually transmitted infections at the time. Furthermore, Dr. Hinton did not stop at research. He also trained public health workers across the nation. Consequently, he helped raise the standards for laboratories everywhere. Ultimately, these improvements became essential for tracking and stopping infectious diseases.

This story is part of our series on Historical Black Figures in Medicine.
