Hidden Healers: A Celebration of Historical Black Figures in Medicine: Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson (1889–1975)

Lillie Mae Carroll Jackson stood at the forefront of the fight to desegregate hospitals in Baltimore. For years, she led sustained campaigns to challenge unfair policies that denied Black patients access to necessary care.

Because of her relentless advocacy, healthcare access improved directly for countless individuals. Furthermore, her efforts helped lay the vital groundwork for the eventual federal enforcement of hospital integration across the country.

Ultimately, Jackson’s work demonstrates how civil rights activism functioned as a powerful and necessary public health intervention.
