Vanessa Lacewell: Redefining Black Greek Heritage and Legacy Through Fashion

Every house begins with a vision. For Vanessa Lacewell, founder of Worldwide Origins, that vision was rooted in cultural conviction and a deep understanding of what the Black Greek community deserved. Since 1990, she has set a standard of excellence, creating pieces that honor the legacy of Black Greek life.

The Birth of a Vision: Vanessa Lacewell’s Journey

Raised in Fayetteville, North Carolina, Vanessa Lacewell grew up in a home where discipline and devotion were lived, not taught. The daughter of a military man and a teacher, her upbringing laid the foundation for her future endeavors.

Her professional journey began in corporate America, working for companies like Miles Laboratories and M&M Mars. However, a yearning to create something of her own led her to leave the corporate world behind. This decision marked the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

For over a century, the women of the Divine Nine—Alpha Kappa Alpha, Delta Sigma Theta, Zeta Phi Beta, and Sigma Gamma Rho—have been the architects of change. From the halls of Congress to the forefront of civil rights movements, these sororities have cultivated a legacy of excellence that transcends generations.

This Women’s History Month, we honor the trailblazers, the innovators, and the leaders who have shaped our world through sisterhood and service. Their commitment to scholarship, activism, and community empowerment continues to inspire us all to reach higher.

Join us in celebrating their monumental impact on history and culture.

The Origin of Worldwide Origins

In 1990, a chance encounter on a tennis court introduced Lacewell to Kente cloth, a sacred fabric woven in Ghana. That evening, she created the first Kente wristband—a piece born from creativity, faith, and an unwavering belief in the beauty of cultural heritage. This moment became the foundation of her company, Worldwide Origins, officially established in 1992 in St. Louis, Missouri.

Serving the Divine 9: A Sacred Responsibility

Vanessa Lacewell’s discovery of the Divine 9 community was not accidental—it was inevitable. She recognized the unique devotion of Black Greek life, where members carry their letters for life, honoring them as symbols of excellence, brotherhood, and sisterhood. This community became the perfect canvas for her creative vision.

Building a Legacy with Terry Carter

What began as a boutique Afrocentric product line grew into a national supplier of fraternity and sorority jewelry and accessories. Lacewell partnered with co-founder Terry Carter, and together, they built Worldwide Origins into a brand guided by tradition, not trends.

For over 30 years, Lacewell has co-designed every collection with Marketing Director David Beckford. Their shared reverence for the Divine 9 experience is evident in every piece, from the symbols to the stones, ensuring each creation honors the legacy of Black Greek culture.

Recognition and Devotion: The Heart of Worldwide Origins

At every convention, conclave, and gathering, the Worldwide Origins booth stands as a testament to the brand’s devotion. Lacewell measures success not in revenue but in recognition. Members return year after year, not just to browse but to celebrate the brand’s commitment to excellence.

Honoring Black Greek Culture

Though not Greek herself, Vanessa Lacewell has spent over three decades listening to, learning from, and serving the Black Greek community. She believes that serving this culture is not a privilege of commerce but a sacred responsibility.

Worldwide Origins: A Legacy of Excellence

At Worldwide Origins, the mission is clear: to create for the culture, honor its legacy, and remain devoted to excellence. Since 1990, Vanessa Lacewell has upheld this standard, and it remains the foundation of the brand today.
