Gluttony And The Bible: A Biblical and Societal Perspective
Most people think of gluttony simply as excessive eating. This is certainly one way the Bible defines it (Proverbs 23:20 NKJV). However, God’s Word teaches us much more.
Gluttony includes a pattern of self-gratification. It is about gratifying the lust of your flesh. If you are honest with yourself, you might see this pattern in your own life. You may have developed a habit of eating unhealthy foods and beverages. This often happens when you become entangled with the sin of gluttony.
The Biblical Cost of Rebellion
The Bible gives us stark warnings about this behavior. In Deuteronomy 21:18-21, we learn about the stubborn and rebellious glutton. The scripture says he was stoned to death. Why was the punishment so severe? It was done “so that all Israel would hear and fear.” The goal was to stop sin in its tracks before it could spread to the rest of Jewish society.
This teaches us a vital lesson about our health today. The path to permanent weight loss begins with repentance. We cannot simply diet; we must change our hearts. Refusing to repent can lead to a similar fate as the rebellious glutton. It often results in an early and unnecessary death.

Gluttony as a Sign of Moral Decay
Obesity is not just an epidemic that affects individuals. It impacts entire nations. The United States is not the only country facing this crisis. Most affluent countries in the world are experiencing the same problem.
This is not a new issue in human history. The Bible clearly states that gluttony has taken hold of entire societies in the past. In Titus 1:12, the Apostle Paul quotes a prophet regarding the people of Crete. He explains, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons” (Titus 1:12 Berean Study Bible).
That Scripture is revealing. It teaches us that gluttony is a symptom of a society’s moral decay. Like the Cretan society, we often fail to put away evildoers. Instead, we have embraced stubborn and rebellious ways.
How Society Swells with Sin
As an individual gets fatter due to a gluttonous lifestyle, society mirrors that growth. Societies as a whole get fatter when they collectively gratify the flesh. This happens when we stop living in accordance with God’s Word.
Put another way, we are rebelling against God. The more we disobey His commandments as a society, the more saturated in sin our country becomes. This is happening across the rest of the world too. Just as a person’s body swells with fat, a nation swells with sin. Gluttony is a physical manifestation of what takes place spiritually in a sinful society.
The Power of Repentance
God has shined the light of His Word on your sin. Now, you should confess it and repent. This is the first step to freedom. The Holy Spirit will empower you to do what you cannot do alone. You can succeed where so many others have failed.
