Exploring the Impact of Nutrition in Modern Healthcare Strategies

At Food & Friends, we know that food heals. In fact, Food is Medicine provides the key to better health for thousands of neighbors. Consequently, our clients enjoy a higher quality of life each year.

Since 1988, our team has led this vital movement. Furthermore, we have helped over 49,000 seriously ill neighbors lead healthier lives. Today, we serve as recognized experts on Food is Medicine. In addition, we lead the field in medically tailored meal interventions and medical nutrition therapy.

Defining Food is Medicine

The U.S. Department of Health defines “Food is Medicine” as a broad, integrative strategy. Specifically, this approach promotes optimal health and reduces disease burdens. Healthcare systems achieve this by pairing nutritious food with human services, education, and policy changes. Ultimately, this work thrives through collaboration between healthcare providers and local communities.

Research studies confirm the power of these interventions. For instance, Medically Tailored Meals (MTMs), Medically Tailored Groceries (MTGs), and Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) transform patient care. Together, these programs help manage illness symptoms and treatment side effects. As a result, patients experience better health outcomes, fewer hospitalizations, and lower healthcare costs.

Furthermore, our nationally recognized programs integrate directly into each client’s care plan. Therefore, we enhance nutrition, ease harsh treatment side effects, and significantly reduce rehospitalization risks.

History of the Movement

The Food is Medicine movement traces its roots to the early HIV/AIDS crisis. During that era, stigma, isolation, and severe malnutrition heavily impacted diagnosed individuals.

However, activists, healthcare providers, and caring neighbors quickly took action. Indeed, they recognized the power of a nutritious, home-delivered meal. Such meals effectively combated both physical health declines and devastating social isolation.

Initially, volunteers prepared the first medically tailored meals in cramped church kitchens and local restaurants. Then, dedicated drivers delivered each meal directly to the client’s home. In short, these nutritious deliveries provided a vital lifeline to those in need.
