The Mushy Guru: Labor, Light, and a Little More Day

As summer winds down and daylight hours shrink, the loss of evening light takes a real toll on our energy. Discover how honoring work requires protecting personal margin and workplace well-being.

Overview: As summer fades into fall, seasonal daylight loss directly threatens professional stamina, team culture, and work-life balance. Protecting evening sunlight is not just a personal comfort; it is a critical workplace wellness strategy. By intentionally building daily margins outside of work hours, professionals and leaders can prevent burnout and maintain long-term executive performance.

Can We Save Sunshine for Workplace Wellness?

More Daylight

Labor Day means different things to different people. Traditionally, it honors the social and economic achievements of American workers and their contributions to our nation’s strength and well-being.

For many of us today, it signals:

  • A long holiday weekend
  • The unofficial close of summer
  • A return to a fuller work rhythm
  • The moment your favorite white pants are supposed to exit your wardrobe

For years, that last rule bothered me more than I care to admit. I happen to own a fabulous white pantsuit that is heavy enough for winter yet apparently too bright for fall. Who made this rule? I have questions.

The Premature Rush into Autumn

Some readers may wonder why fall is already on the radar when temperatures outside are still flirting with 90 degrees.

Retailers, however, have clearly made up their minds. Walk into almost any store right now and you will find Halloween decorations and Christmas trees sharing the exact same shelf space. The market demands that we prepare for fall, winter, and the holiday season all at once—regardless of what the thermometer says.

Are you tired of business programs and neighborhood initiatives that don’t quite fit your day-to-day realities? For over 40 years, the Chinese Mutual Aid Association (CMAA) has been a cornerstone for Chicago-area families and entrepreneurs, serving over 1.3 million people across Uptown, West Ridge, and Elgin. Now, heading into the second half of 2026, CMAA is launching a brief community assessment to find out exactly what kind of financial assistance, workforce training, and local grants your neighborhood needs most right now.

Chasing the Evening Light

This year, my attention has shifted from arbitrary fashion rules to something far more valuable: daylight.

Nothing beats glancing at the clock on a summer evening to find it is nearly 8:00 PM, with the sun lingering like a guest who refuses to leave the party early. Conversely, winter darkness arriving at 5:00 PM—often before the workday even wraps up—drains momentum.

What does light mean to the way we experience our lives and our work?

Balancing Labor with Sustainable Living

Labor Day celebrates work, making it the ideal moment to reflect not just on how much we labor, but on how well we live around that labor.

Executive wellness, employee well-being, and sustainable performance are essential components of modern workplace culture. Evening daylight represents pure possibility:

  • An intentional post-work walk
  • Dinner outdoors with family
  • An uninterrupted conversation on the porch
  • A mental boundary between closing the laptop and ending the day

We cannot stop the seasons from turning, nor can we unilaterally stop the clocks from falling back. We can, however, protect the light in our daily routines and preserve the energy required to lead, work, and live well.

If we ever get a vote on keeping permanent evening sunshine, count me in. As for the white pantsuit? I am exercising executive authority to keep it in rotation.
