Overview: The Missouri Public Transit Association has recognized exceptional transit operators in St. Louis with the prestigious Champion Award, celebrating their dedication and service to the community.
The Missouri Public Transit Association (MPTA) honored four exceptional St. Louis transit operators with prestigious Champion Awards. The association celebrated their community dedication during the 2026 Missouri Transit Conference.
Connecting Communities Through Dedicated Service
For thousands of Missourians, a transit operator serves as more than just a driver. Instead, operators provide vital links to work, healthcare, and groceries. They help riders protect their personal independence every day. In addition, they keep people connected to their local neighborhoods.
To honor these vital contributions, the MPTA presented Missouri Transit Operator Champion Awards to four local workers. Transit employers nominated each of the recipients for their exceptional reliability and service.
“Transit operators are the backbone of public transportation systems,” said Kimberly Cella, executive director of the MPTA. “They work diligently every day to ensure riders reach their destinations safely. Their efforts often extend far beyond basic transportation. Therefore, these awards celebrate the deep compassion and service they bring to our communities.”
Meet the St. Louis Award Honorees
Donell Dean: Metro Transit
Donell Dean has provided safe, dependable transportation for Metro Transit across a 27-year career. Throughout this time, Dean has demonstrated exceptional professionalism and a strong work ethic.
Besides serving as a Van Operator, Dean trains future drivers as a Line Instructor. In this role, he models and reinforces core safety practices. Over the past year, Dean maintained a flawless driving record without a single accident. Furthermore, he earned multiple passenger compliments and achieved perfect attendance.
Frankie Hedges: OATS Transit (Mideast Region)
Frankie Hedges has driven for OATS Transit since March 2008. Over the years, she has consistently exceeded standard expectations.
Hedges prioritizes rider safety above everything else. Because of her dedication, she has canceled personal time off multiple times to ensure full route coverage. As a result, her unwavering reliability continues to strengthen the entire OATS Transit network.
Gladys Mason: Metro Transit
Gladys Mason has served transit riders for more than 32 years as a Metro Transit Bus Operator. Over that time, she earned the agency’s Safe Driver Award for 22 consecutive years.
Her courage stood out during one of the region’s worst snowstorms. When dispatchers sought volunteers to maintain service, Mason agreed without hesitation. Despite encountering more than 10 inches of snow, she safely reported to work. Consequently, she transported stranded passengers who otherwise could not get home.
Jacqueline Williams: Metro Transit
Jacqueline Williams has dedicated 29 years to Metro Transit as a skilled MetroLink Operator. Throughout her career, she has built a reputation for sharp vigilance and sound judgment.
Recently, Williams proved this situational awareness while operating a train near the Eads Bridge. She spotted a pedestrian standing on the bridge ledge and recognized immediate danger. First, she notified the Operations Control Center. Next, she calmly engaged the individual in conversation. She successfully persuaded the person to board the train to safety. Finally, she coordinated prompt support from emergency personnel.
Supporting Transit Statewide
