New Jersey Urban News, the state’s leading Black-owned news outlet, has been awarded a $120,000 grant from the New Jersey Civic Information Consortium to strengthen coverage of communities of color across the Garden State.
In its recent funding cycle, the Consortium awarded $754,650 to 10 organizations across the state to help fund local news initiatives. Since launching in 2021, it has awarded nearly $10.8 million in grants.
The funding will support the expansion of the newsroom’s editorial staff, bolster investigative reporting on public institutions, and grow audience engagement initiatives designed to better connect with Black and brown residents on the issues that affect their daily lives.
“We are deeply grateful to the Civic Information Consortium for this investment in our mission, said Penda Howell, Co-Founder, Publisher, and CEO of New Jersey Urban News. “It is both a validation of the work we’ve done and an opportunity to ensure that our communities continue to have a trusted voice in the media landscape.”
Founded to amplify voices often overlooked in mainstream media, NJ Urban News focuses on stories shaping the lives of the state’s 1.5 million Black and brown residents, with a mission to inform, uplift, and provide accountability journalism for New Jersey’s diverse communities.
