St. Louis Public Schools Downgraded to Provisional Accreditation
In a stinging move by the state education board, the accreditation of St. Louis Public Schools has dropped to provisional status.
The Missouri State Board of Education officially lowered the district’s standing from full accreditation on Tuesday, January 13.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Myra Berry addressed the change in a statement on the district’s website. She emphasized that the school system remains steadfast in its goal to move forward. Furthermore, she confirmed the district is resolute in its plan to restore full accreditation.
“To our staff: your work matters, and it is seen. To our families and community: our commitment to your children and to this city has not wavered,” Berry writes. “This moment does not define SLPS—our response to it will.”
What Provisional Status Means for Students
Importantly, provisional accreditation is temporary. It does not change day-to-day school operations.
“Our schools remain open, our students continue learning, and our work continues uninterrupted,” Berry said.
However, the new status carries specific requirements.
“What provisional accreditation does mean is that the state expects continued progress,” she explained. “We must show sustained improvement in areas we have already identified. We have already begun addressing academic performance, financial stewardship, operational stability, and organizational culture.”
Union Reaction and Support
The American Federation of Teachers (ATF) Local 420 represents SLPS teachers. They released a statement that strongly condemned the state school board’s decision.
“We are disappointed in the Missouri Board of Education’s action,” said President Ray Cummings. He specifically noted his frustration with changing the status from ‘fully accredited’ to ‘provisionally accredited.’
“To single out city schools is disrespectful of voters and due process,” Cummings stated.
Moreover, he argued for more patience with current leadership.
“The new leadership of the district should have been given every opportunity to correct the previous administration’s errors,” Cummings continued. “We applaud the positive change. We also suggest giving real support and encouragement to the current superintendent.”
Ongoing District Challenges
SLPS has faced several tough issues recently. These include the dismissal of an interim superintendent and problems with school bus operations. Additionally, the district submitted an audit late and proposed closing several schools. Other hurdles include the resignation of the chief legal officer and challenged academic scores.
The Missouri State Board of Education (MSBE) sets policy for the state. They also establish accreditation standards and certification requirements for Missouri public schools. Furthermore, they appoint the Commissioner of Education. The Board also oversees the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), which acts as its administrative arm.
The Board consists of citizens appointed by the governor. They manage teacher certification, curriculum standards, and student assessments. Additionally, they handle funding distribution for state education. Their recent actions include lowering St. Louis Public Schools’ accreditation to provisional.
