Therme Group’s upcoming Therme DC project at Poplar Point offers a major opportunity for Ward 8—providing not just an innovative wellness destination but also significant community investment. The project will transform 15 acres of the long-neglected 110-acre site into a top-tier health and wellbeing center, with thermal baths, saunas, mineral pools, waterslides, immersive art, lush greenery, and a variety of restaurants.

Anchoring this development is a planned 70-acre riverfront park, including integrated trails and approximately 25 acres of mixed-use space, linking recreation, access to nature, and economic growth.

Economically, Therme DC will significantly boost the local economy. It is expected to generate around $1.5 billion in tax revenue over 25 years, create about 5,000 local construction jobs during the development phase, and support roughly 720 permanent jobs once operational.

Therme’s commitment to Ward 8 goes beyond statistics: they are developing a workforce plan to train and hire local residents, ensuring that job opportunities directly benefit the community.

Additionally, the company will invest in community wellbeing initiatives, support local businesses, fund arts and culture programs, and provide discounted access and affordable wellness education for youth, seniors, and neighborhood groups.

A small protest took place at the project announcement about the use of public land. Participants held signs that said “No Public Land for Sale,” expressing concern that public space is being diverted to non-essential uses, such as luxury recreation, instead of being used for housing or public services.

Additionally, concerns exist about prioritizing housing, with critics highlighting the urgent need for affordable housing and basic services in Wardtak 8, arguing these should take priority over a wellness resort.

However, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser says, “We know that Therme DC is a great fit for Poplar Point. Not only will it create jobs and opportunities, but it will also stimulate economic growth along the Anacostia waterfront in Ward 8. This is a unique opportunity for DC and an economic driver for Ward 8—creating jobs, attracting visitors, and offering new opportunities for our residents.”

Providing local engagement and leadership is Wanda D. Lockridge, a lifelong Ward 8 resident and former chair of the D.C. Democratic State Committee. She serves as the Director of Engagement at Therme DC. Her strong community ties, extensive civic experience, and unwavering dedication to Ward 8 ensure that this project truly reflects residents’ realities and aspirations. Under her leadership, the development is seen not just as an amenity but as a collaborative effort for inclusive growth and renewal.

“For me, this work is genuinely personal,” says Lockridge. “I was born and raised right here in Ward 8, and I understand both the struggles and potential of this community. Working with Therme Group allows us to bring top-quality investment and opportunity directly to our neighbors—creating jobs, strengthening families, and driving the economic revitalization our community needs. This is about honoring our history while building a brighter, healthier future for generations to come.”
