Honoring Caregivers: The Heart of Prostate Cancer Advocacy in 2026
Prostate cancer is treatable if detected early. This simple truth has been the cornerstone of The Empowerment Network, Inc. (TEN), a St. Louis-based non-profit organization dedicated to prostate cancer advocacy, awareness, and education for men aged 40 and older. As we step into 2026, we proudly declare this year as The Year of the Caregiver, a heartfelt tribute to the unsung heroes who have stood by survivors every step of the way.
Caregivers—spouses, friends, family members, and doctors—are the lifeline for many men battling prostate cancer. Their love, persistence, and unwavering support often make the difference between despair and hope. This year, we honor their contributions with the theme, “Because They Cared.”
The Power of Early Detection
Prostate cancer awareness begins with education and action. Routine preventive care, including PSA testing, is critical for early detection. As Mellve Shahid, Sr., TEN’s Founder and Executive Director, emphasizes, “Survivorship often starts with someone who cared enough to say, ‘You need to get checked.’”
TEN continues to provide free PSA vouchers through partnerships with organizations like the Siteman Cancer Center. These initiatives ensure that men have access to life-saving screenings, especially in underserved communities.

Celebrating Caregivers: A Year of Recognition
Honoring the Quiet Heroes
Caregivers are often the unsung heroes in the fight against prostate cancer. They provide emotional support, attend doctor’s appointments, and offer encouragement during the darkest moments. In 2026, TEN will host events to celebrate these quiet heroes, including a fashion show and a luncheon dedicated to caregivers and medical professionals.

Prostate Cancer Treatment Innovations
Exploring New Frontiers in Treatment
Dr. Andrew McLaughlin, a urologist at the VA hospital, recently discussed emerging treatments for prostate cancer. While surgery and radiation remain the standard of care, newer options like TULSA-PRO® (Transurethral Ultrasound Ablation) are gaining attention for men with less aggressive disease.
Dr. McLaughlin also highlighted the experimental role of stem cells in prostate cancer treatment. Although promising, these treatments are not yet FDA-approved, underscoring the importance of continued research and personalized care.
Survivor Stories: Thriving Beyond Cancer
“We Survive, and We Thrive”
The rallying cry of TEN’s monthly support meetings, “We Survive, and We Thrive,” embodies the spirit of prostate cancer survivors. George Craft, a survivor and advocate, created this phrase to inspire others to live full, rich lives after their diagnosis.
TEN’s Life After Prostate Cancer Series showcases stories of resilience, including Minister Joseph Crockett’s triumphant moment ringing the Siteman Cancer Center bell after completing his last radiation treatment.
