St. Louis Leads in Food & AgTech Innovation with Over $1 Billion Investment

Investors are pouring more than $1 billion into the St. Louis region. Consequently, this area continues to grow as a top national hub for Food and AgTech manufacturing, distribution, and innovation. Furthermore, the bi-state Missouri and Illinois area boasts a central U.S. location. It also offers an unmatched freight network for global access and a famous research ecosystem.

Home to Industry Giants

For example, St. Louis houses famous brands like Anheuser-Busch InBev, Purina, Post Holdings, Tyson Foods, and Prairie Farms. In addition, top research facilities operate here. These include the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center and the Bayer Innovation Center.

Naturally, these companies enjoy major competitive advantages. They easily access raw materials, reach global markets, and hire skilled workers. In fact, the region employs nearly 3.5 times as many sector workers as similar-sized cities.

The Heart of the Agricultural Belt

Farmers produce half of all U.S. crops within a 500-mile radius of St. Louis. Therefore, the area serves as a perfect spot for food processing, animal nutrition, beverage production, and agricultural technology. Moreover, ongoing investments highlight the sector’s massive momentum. They also point to strong long-term growth.

Massive New Facilities and Jobs

First, American Foods Group built an $800 million beef processing facility in Warren County, Missouri. This massive 775,000-square-foot plant opened in May 2025. Initially, it hired 400 new employees. Eventually, it will employ up to 1,300 workers. Ultimately, experts expect it to generate a $1 billion regional economic impact.

ā€œIt really is a great location,ā€ said Scott Willert. He serves as president of America’s Service Line and America’s Logistics. ā€œIt provides good opportunity to serve our customers and expand as that becomes an opportunity.ā€

Meanwhile, Performance Food Group, Inc. opened a new 338,000-square-foot distribution facility in Berkley, Missouri, in November 2025. This $115 million investment adds about 100 new local jobs. Similarly, Prairie Farms is currently building a $9 million headquarters in Edwardsville, Illinois. They plan to finish the project in summer 2026.

Expanding Existing Operations

Furthermore, Tyson Foods recently spent $180 million to expand its Caseyville, Illinois, facility. This project retains 300 existing jobs. It also creates 400 new positions by adding seven new production lines. Previously, company leaders noted that location and workforce drove their decision. Specifically, the central location helps them meet customer needs quickly. They also praised local schools for teaching in-demand skills.

Additionally, global beverage leader Anheuser-Busch InBev announced an $8 million investment in October 2024. This money upgrades its flagship St. Louis brewery. Overall, the brewer has invested more than $165 million in its St. Louis campus since 2019. For instance, they renovated and reopened their Technical Excellence Center to help workers advance their careers.

Anheuser-Busch CEO Brendan Whitworth praised the move. ā€œOur continued investments in our St. Louis brewery benefit not only our local team, but also our hometown,ā€ he said. ā€œIt continues to be a core part of our identity after more than 165 years.ā€

A World-Class Innovation Ecosystem

Beyond basic manufacturing, St. Louis shines as a premier AgTech innovation ecosystem. Over 1,000 plant scientists work here. This represents one of the highest concentrations worldwide. Furthermore, the region supports more than 400 biotech research and development companies. Venture capital and commercialization programs back these exciting ventures. Together, independent startups and large corporations pioneer solutions for global farming challenges.

Moreover, massive grants prove the sector’s collaborative strength. Recently, innovators won $87 million in National Institutes of Health startup grants. Congress also provided $142 million in federal commercialization funding. Consequently, researchers can quickly move breakthroughs from the lab to the marketplace.

The “Ag Coast of America”

An unparalleled freight network overlays this innovation ecosystem. Locals call a 15-mile stretch of the Mississippi River the ā€œAg Coast of America.ā€ It features 16 barge transfer facilities with massive capacity. Additionally, the region offers four ice-free ports, six Class I railroads, four major interstates, and two international cargo airports. Thus, companies efficiently move raw materials and finished products worldwide.

ā€œThe same rich agricultural heritage and strategic location within America’s heartland that drives businesses to locate here is driving the region toward AgTech innovation,ā€ said Mary Lamie. She leads the St. Louis Regional Freightway. ā€œCollaboration is fostered among scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors as the St. Louis region propels AgTech startups towards success.ā€

Driving Future Economic Growth

Ultimately, Food and AgTech stands out as one of four targeted industries where St. Louis holds a clear advantage. The others include Advanced Manufacturing, Metals, and Chemicals. Together, these powerful sectors reinforce the region’s role as a global logistics hub. Most importantly, they drive massive economic growth and job creation across the entire bi-state area.
