Patricia Washington’s ‘In Her Prime’: Redefining Aging for Women Over 40

In Her Prime is more than just a concept; it’s a movement. Patricia Washington is challenging the outdated narrative that women over 40 are past their prime. Instead, she’s shining a spotlight on their vitality, wisdom, and influence. Women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond are not just thriving—they’re leading, creating, and redefining what it means to live fully. This article explores Patricia’s vision, the inspiration behind In Her Prime, and why women over 40 are the main story.

The Inspiration Behind In Her Prime

Patricia Washington’s journey to creating In Her Prime began with a simple observation: women over 40 are often overlooked or misrepresented in media and society.

“We all know women in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond who are killing the game. They’re leading at work, they’re stylish, they’re wise, they have spark,” Patricia explains. “But too often, women in that age group aren’t represented—or they’re misrepresented. They’re treated like an afterthought.”

Patricia’s mission is to change that narrative. She wants to celebrate the depth, experience, and influence of women who are often sidelined. “When’s the last time you saw a list honoring fifty women over fifty who are setting the world on fire?” she asks.

Redefining Beauty and Power Over 40

The Lie of Expiration

Patricia points to advertising and marketing as culprits in perpetuating the idea that a woman’s prime is tied to youth.

“We absorb what we’re shown: beauty is wrinkle-free; beauty is pale skin, blonde hair, blue eyes; beauty is youth in a bikini. And if you don’t fit that, you start thinking you’re not beautiful—like you don’t deserve the product, the lifestyle, the ring, the joy.”

This conditioning has led many women to believe that their value diminishes with age. But Patricia is here to dismantle that lie. She highlights how other cultures revere age and seek leadership from those with lived experience. In contrast, the U.S. often worships youth, leaving older women to feel invisible.

What It Means to Be in Your Prime

For Patricia, being in your prime is about liberation.

“It’s being free of expectations. Doing what you want to do, if it makes sense to you, and you’re not hurting anybody. It’s being in touch with who you are, what you need, what you want, and how you contribute.”

This freedom comes from shedding societal expectations and embracing authenticity. Patricia encourages women to stop shrinking themselves to make others comfortable. “I used to shrink so other people could feel comfortable. Not anymore,” she says.

How Women Over 40 Can Move Fearlessly

Patricia’s advice for women over 40 is simple: stop treating aging like the end of the story. Instead, see it as a blank canvas.

“Take care of your health, do your best physically, and recognize that this is your chapter. What do you want to do with it?”

She also emphasizes the importance of decisiveness. “Ambiguity? I can’t do it. There’s no gray area for me. It is or it isn’t. You can or you can’t. You will or you won’t,” she says. This clarity saves time and energy, allowing women to focus on what truly matters.

Building a Movement: The Women of In Her Prime

When asked what kind of women In Her Prime will gather, Patricia envisions a community of fearless, authentic women who are comfortable in their skin.

“Women who are cheerleaders for themselves and others. And bridges—bridges to younger women to say: It gets good over here. It is good over here. Come on in. The water is warm.”

This movement isn’t about polite visibility; it’s about rightful presence. Patricia isn’t asking for women over 40 to be included—she’s repositioning them as the point.

Embracing the Freedom of Becoming

Patricia’s message is clear: aging is not something to fear but something to embrace. She encourages women to enjoy the journey, accept the changes, and live unapologetically.

“I’ve never feared aging, but I do believe we have to remember to enjoy, not just chase. Be. Accept the gray hair, the wrinkles, the changes.”

And if you’re wondering whether you’ve missed your moment, Patricia has one final piece of advice: you haven’t. Come on in. The water is warm.
