The Legacy of the US Civil Rights Movement and Its Impact on Future Generations
The US Civil Rights Movement: A Legacy That Shapes the Future
There are moments in history that irrevocably change the world and shape the future. The US Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s and 1970s is one such era. This movement not only influenced global civil rights and humanitarian campaigns but also left a profound impact on the generations that followed. For many Gen Z Americans, the injustices combatted during this movement seemed like distant historical concepts. However, as I grew up and educated myself on Black history and the history of racism in this country, I realized that the work of the Civil Rights Movement was far from finished. Once again, I turned to the leaders of the past for guidance on how to move forward.

Lessons from the US Civil Rights Movement
From the leaders of the US Civil Rights Movement, I learned the importance of investing in community and using my voice for change. Silence and passivity, I discovered, are the antitheses of progress. The only way to move forward is to extend a hand back and pull others up with you. These lessons were imparted to me not only through classes and documentaries but also through my parents and family, who were born at the end of the Civil Rights Movement and carried its values forward.
One of the most inspiring figures of this era was the late Jesse Jackson. His appearance on āSesame Street,ā where he recited his empowering poem āI Am Somebodyā, left an indelible mark on generations. Jacksonās words reminded us of the value of our dignity and self-worth:
āI am Black! Brown! White! I speak a different language! But I must be respected! Protected! Never rejected! I am! Godās child! I am! Somebody!ā ā Jesse Jackson
This message resonated deeply with Generation X, who passed it on to my generation, teaching us that we could achieve anything we set our minds to.
Challenges in Todayās Political Climate
As todayās political leaders push for a return to an era of mistrust, division, and discrimination, it can be disheartening for those of us raised with opposing values. The passing of leaders like Jesse Jackson, who championed Black pride and self-determination, amid a political and corporate push for the opposite, is unsettling. However, if thereās one thing my generationāthe generation of instant gratificationāmust understand, itās that the lack of immediate results doesnāt mean we should give up.
The leaders of the US Civil Rights Movement dedicated their lives to their causes. They carried their values into every room they entered, every book they published, and every speech they gave. Progress has always faced setbacks from those invested in maintaining the status quo, but the work must continue.
The Work Continues: A Call to Action
The legacy of the US Civil Rights Movement persists in how we live our lives today. Around the world, young people are using their voices and platforms to highlight the issues facing their communities. They are choosing connection over division, touching hearts, and expanding minds. The message of unity and dignity carries forward, with Jesse Jacksonās āI Am Somebodyā going viral on social media and Black history being told and remembered.
The past continues to guide us into the future. The lessons of the US Civil Rights Movement remind us that progress is a journey, not a destination. As we honor the leaders who came before us, we must also take up the mantle and continue their work.
