Tiff Massey is an artist who specializes in installations, public art, and wearable sculptures inspired by adornment. With a background in metalwork, Massey applies her skills to create large-scale architectural sculptures that pay homage to the diverse neighborhoods of Detroit and the rich cultures and styles of West Africa and Black America.
In addition to her art, Massey is a strong advocate for community engagement and explores the interconnectedness between identity, public spaces, and community. Her latest project, 7 Mile + Livernois, is a reflection of this passion.
It not only refers to the neighborhood where Massey grew up and which holds a significant place in Detroit’s Black business and fashion district, but it also represents a new art and community space that Massey is building. Here, she combines her artistic craft with her desire to foster a sense of kinship within the community.
At 7 Mile + Livernois, Massey presents her most ambitious museum installation to date, showcasing commissioned sculptures alongside works by other artists from the Detroit Institute of Arts collection. Through her creations, Massey challenges traditional perceptions of art and its role in the community, creating a vibrant and inclusive narrative of Detroit. Her art invites all people to embrace and celebrate their collective identity, ancestral heritage, and unique beauty.
