Dr. Carlita Vasser, CEO and Founder of At Home Care, appeared on The Bernie Hayes Show to discuss the vital role of in-home care services for seniors, pediatric patients, and disabled adults. Celebrating 15 years of operations across Missouri—including locations in Ferguson, Kansas City, and Springfield—At Home Care offers 24/7 personal care, respite support, skilled nursing, and guidance through programs like Consumer Directed Services (CDS) and VA benefits to help individuals remain independent at home.

ST. LOUIS, MO — Navigating healthcare decisions for aging relatives or family members with disabilities can be challenging. On a recent episode of The Bernie Hayes Show, Dr. Carlita Vasser, CEO, Director of Nursing, and Founder of At Home Care, sat down for an insightful one-on-one discussion about the power of home-based care, healthy aging, and the upcoming 15th anniversary of her organization.
Dr. Vasser, who recently completed her doctorate from Webster University and is a registered nurse by trade, shared how At Home Care empowers families across Missouri to maintain independence, dignity, and quality of life in their own homes.
What Is At Home Care?
Founded 15 years ago out of a mission to provide more holistic support than standard home health agencies offer, At Home Care delivers non-medical and skilled nursing services tailored to individual needs.
Unlike short-term home health agencies that focus primarily on physical therapy or post-operative checkups, At Home Care provides continuous, long-term assistance designed to prevent re-hospitalization and keep individuals in their familiar surroundings.
“The goal is to keep people independent in their own home as long as possible and allow them the opportunity to have choices in their living arrangements,” explained Dr. Vasser.

Comprehensive In-Home Services
At Home Care serves a wide demographic across Missouri—including disabled adults, pediatric patients, and seniors.
Core Services Provided:
- Personal Care & Daily Living Support: Assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, housekeeping, meal preparation, and grocery shopping.
- Essential Transportation: Rides to physician appointments, pharmacy pickups, and community errands.
- 24/7 Round-the-Clock Support: Flexible scheduling with caregivers available around the clock to match the client’s preferred routine.
- Respite Care for Family Caregivers: Short-term relief for family members caring for loved ones, giving primary caregivers time to rest, work, or run personal errands.
- Skilled Nursing Care: Services provided by Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs), including diabetic foot checks, skin assessments, nail care, and patient education.
- Specialized Care: Support for individuals living with Alzheimer’s, dementia, and cognitive disabilities such as autism.
The Consumer Directed Services (CDS) & Veterans Programs
During the broadcast, Bernie Hayes and Dr. Vasser highlighted specialized care pathways that assist Missouri residents:
1. Consumer Directed Services (CDS) Program
A Medicaid-funded initiative administered through the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services. The CDS program allows eligible individuals needing a nursing-home level of care to select and hire their own caregiver—which often includes immediate family members (such as adult children) or trusted friends.
2. Veterans Home Care Benefits
At Home Care actively supports military veterans through programs directly funded by the Veterans Administration (VA), as well as through the Aid and Attendance Pension Program, helping former service members receive dedicated home care services.
Built on Faith, Vision, and Community Support
Reflecting on the company’s inception 15 years ago, Dr. Vasser recalled how a divine encounter with a stranger led her to register the business in Jefferson City, Missouri. Her background as a bed-side nurse drove her to create a service model rooted in empathy and long-term relationships.
“At any time, any one of us could have a bad experience that takes our health to a different space and we would need care ourselves,” Dr. Vasser shared. “Without God, I couldn’t do any of this.”
As At Home Care approaches its September 9th anniversary, the agency continues to grow. Headquartered inside the Urban League Community Empowered Center in Ferguson, Missouri, At Home Care also operates regional offices in Kansas City and Springfield, servicing most of the state.
