NEW YORK CITY – JULY 20 2013: Reverend Al Sharpton’s National Action Network held a memorial vigil for slain Black teen Trayvon Martin at One Police Plaza in Manhattan on July 20 2013 in New York City

I arrived Wednesday in time for the most fabulous Keepers of the Dream Awards Ceremony, where distinguished and celebrated leaders were recognized for their unwavering commitment to justice and excellence. It was simply mesmerizing, with more than 1,000 in live attendance. The atmosphere was electric—an unforgettable kickoff to what has become one of the most powerful gatherings of truth-tellers and changemakers I’ve ever witnessed.

The 2025 National Action Network (NAN) Convention held April 2–5 in New York City, brought together over 5,000 passionate and powerful voices under the leadership of Rev. Al Sharpton. With 125 chapters across all 50 states, NAN is a beacon of grassroots leadership—manned by everyday community builders, from grandmothers to esteemed faith leaders. This year’s theme, “Being the Light in the Dark,” echoed the urgency of our time, and the organization’s unwavering mantra, “No Justice, No Peace,” rang louder than ever.

As I walked through the halls of this year’s convention, I was struck by the energy, the unity, and the undeniable force of Black resilience. It was energizing. And yet, sobering.

I never imagined that in 2025 I’d be witnessing—and living through—a rollback of civil rights, economic equity, and basic freedoms. That I would be fighting not just for justice, but for the future of my children. But here we are. And it is because of leaders like Rev. Al Sharpton that we are still here, standing, organizing, and resisting. Some may not realize that Rev. Al Sharpton has been in this fight for decades—marching as a young man alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Andrew Young and others. Today, NAN represents more than 1 million people, and its influence is both historical and immediate. Rev. Al Sharpton is not just a legend, he is a living force behind the civil rights movement of today, ensuring that social justice remains alive and actionable.
