Before I introduce our US Open Cup champions, St. Louis City S.C., I want to share that I was glued to my timeline all night. As I waited for someone—anyone—watching the match live to post about a victory, my eyes began to feel heavy. I noticed some fans in a panic, quick to express their pessimism whenever a play didn’t go their way.
When Burki was taken off the field, I saw comments like, “We’re done,” even though no one had scored in the 90+ minutes that followed. Anyway, congratulations to our team! Here are the highlights from my fantastic media team at St. Louis City SC:
COLUMBUS, OH – On Wednesday night, St. Louis CITY SC triumphed over Columbus Crew in a thrilling penalty shootout, securing a 5-3 victory at ScottsMiracle-Gro Field. This historic win marks the club’s first-ever U.S. Open Cup title.
After 120 minutes of intense gameplay that ended in a scoreless draw, the match shifted to penalty kicks. Timo Baumgartl successfully converted CITY SC’s opening attempt, while goalkeeper Ben Lundt made a pivotal save against Columbus’ Santiago Rodríguez. Following their lead, Lukas MacNaughton, Chris Durkin, and Damion Downs each scored their penalties. Daniel Edelman ultimately sealed the victory with the deciding shot, elevating St. Louis CITY SC to a memorable championship win.
This victory not only brings home the coveted U.S. Open Cup but also represents the inaugural trophy in the club’s history, establishing a significant milestone for St. Louis CITY SC.
