Measles Case Confirmed in Kansas City: Symptoms, Prevention, and Vaccination Info
The Kansas City Health Department and the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services (MODHSS) have confirmed a case of measles in an unvaccinated adult. This marks the first reported measles case in a Kansas City resident since 2018. Health officials are urging residents to review their vaccination status and remain vigilant for symptoms of this highly contagious disease.
âMeasles remains one of the most contagious diseases, with the potential for serious complications. The good news is that MMR vaccination is an effective way to prevent measles,â said Dr. Marvia Jones, Director of the Kansas City Health Department.
What You Need to Know About Measles
Symptoms of Measles
Measles symptoms typically appear 7-14 days after exposure to the virus. Common symptoms include:
- High fever (may exceed 104°F)
- Cough
- Runny nose
- Red, watery eyes
- Tiny white spots inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
- A blotchy rash that spreads from the head to the feet
Three to five days after symptoms begin, the characteristic rash usually appears, starting on the face and spreading downward.
If you or someone you know exhibits these symptoms, it is crucial to call your healthcare provider before visiting to prevent spreading the virus to others.
Who Is at Risk?
People who are unvaccinated or unsure of their vaccination status are at the highest risk of contracting measles. However, individuals born before 1957 or those vaccinated with the MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccine are generally considered protected.
If you are unsure of your vaccination status, contact your healthcare provider or the Kansas City Health Department at 816-513-6152.
