Healthy Blue Louisiana is actively addressing these issues by integrating nutrition into its healthcare services. Through initiatives like the “Food is Medicine” program, the organization partners with healthcare providers to screen patients for food insecurity and supply them with nutritious food supplies, along with nutrition education and connections to local food resources. This approach aims to empower individuals to make informed dietary choices, ultimately improving health outcomes across the state.
The Medicaid plan’s president, Dr. Christy Valentine Theard, emphasizes that healthcare is not just about treating illness after it occurs; it’s about prevention, education, and breaking down barriers so every person can get the care they deserve. Providing healthy food is one of the most powerful ways to prevent disease and support thriving communities.
“Access to nutritious food is about more than just meals,” Dr.Valentine Theard said. “When people have the resources and information to make healthy choices, we can prevent illness and make a real impact on the well-being of our communities. It’s about supporting families and creating stronger, healthier neighborhoods.”
Dr. Valentine Theard recently shared these insights during the Essence Fest panel discussion, “Healthy Food, Healthy Eating: It’s More Than Looks — Using Food as Medicine,” part of the 2025 Global Black Economic Forum.
The conversation highlighted how nutrition plays a critical role in preventing and managing illnesses, particularly in communities historically affected by health disparities. Panelists emphasized that healthy eating doesn’t require abandoning cultural food traditions; it’s about balance, moderation, and smart preparation methods that preserve flavor while boosting nutritional value.
Panelists agreed that food is a powerful tool for healing and that education and community support are vital. Programs like “produce prescriptions” and local cooking initiatives help make healthy eating achievable for families.
In Louisiana, access to nutritious food remains essential for everyday well-being. Healthy Blue Louisiana continues to meet that need by connecting families with healthy meals, guidance, and long-term wellness resources. As the holidays near, everyone can make a difference—volunteer, donate, or help raise awareness to build a healthier, more resilient Louisiana.
