Getting an Alignment: The Benefits of Chiropractic Adjustments for Pain Relief and Wellness

Sharp pains, shoulder tightness, and a stiff neck can disrupt your daily life. You might also experience back spasms and tension headaches. These symptoms often signal that your body has experienced some form of trauma, whether from an accident, contact sports, or even a simple physical altercation. After a visit to a chiropractor’s office, I learned that our body’s structure can take a hit and become slightly shifted. Here’s why getting an alignment is important.

Chiropractic is a form of alternative medicine that diagnoses, treats, and prevents mechanical disorders of the musculoskeletal system, especially the spine. Visiting a chiropractor can greatly benefit your health by speeding up your body’s recovery after physical exertion. For instance, lifting weights at the gym places significant pressure on your joints, muscles, and bones. A therapist specializing in the body’s anatomy can tell you if your physical health needs improvement.

The Initial Consultation: X-Rays and Diagnosis

The x-ray camera made a clicking sound as I stood against the white wall. “Turn to your left,” the nurse instructed. After a few moments, I waited in a room to be seen by the doctor.

A courtesy knock preceded the doctor’s entry. He greeted me with a “good morning,” and I replied in kind. The doctor then showed me my x-rays. He began to explain what we were looking at and how a series of chiropractic sessions could repair the issues. During his consultation, he pointed to the x-ray and showed me how my shoulders were shifted. He also revealed that my spine had a slight curve, resembling a candy cane.

Uncovering the Root of the Problem

I was in shock as I looked at the images in the doctor’s office. He asked me to stand up so we could begin the process of getting me back into alignment. He then instructed me to do several squats and stretches. He quickly noticed that my right side lacked natural movement and asked if I felt any tightness in my hips. I confirmed that I did.

I explained to him that an incident in December of 2013 was likely the cause. Once the exercise portion of the exam was complete, he asked me to lie down on an adjustment table. While I was on the table, the doctor performed an alignment adjustment, instructing me to inhale and exhale throughout the process.

The Path to Relief: Treatment and Recovery

After the adjustment, the nurse placed TENS unit pads on the upper parts of my back, near my shoulder blades. She started the treatment, which lasted for just a few minutes, and covered me with a heated blanket. This shockwave therapy helped loosen the tightness I was experiencing in my shoulders, neck, and back.

The relief from the treatment was both an experience and a lesson learned. Our bodies are somewhat like the vehicles we drive. With constant movement, there comes a time when maintenance is needed due to wear and tear.
