A Historic Journey
Founded in 1981 by art advocates Wilhelmina Cole Holladay and Wallace F. Holladay, the museum began as a groundbreaking response to a simple but profound question posed by Wilhelmina: âWhere are all the women artists?â Motivated by the lack of representation of womenâs art in traditional museums, the Holladays started collecting works by women, forming what became the foundation of the museumâs collection.
The museum found its permanent home in 1983 when it acquired the historic Masonic Temple at 1250 New York Avenue, NW. After extensive renovations, the museum opened to the public in 1987 with its inaugural exhibition, American Women Artists, 1830â1930. Over the years, the museum has grown significantly, undergoing a major renovation in 2021 to expand gallery space, improve visitor accessibility, and introduce the innovative Learning Commons.
