(Washington, D.C., November 24, 2025) – In a significant move to bolster American agriculture and provide critical nutrition assistance, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke L. Rollins announced today that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will purchase up to $30 million in fresh fruit from American farmers. These purchases, authorized under Section 32 of the Agriculture Act of 1935, aim to support U.S. producers, address surplus commodities, and ensure healthier food options for communities in need.
This initiative underscores the Trump Administration’s commitment to strengthening rural economies, supporting American farmers, and enhancing the nation’s food supply chain. The fresh fruit will be distributed to food banks and nutrition assistance programs across the country, providing a dual benefit of reducing food waste and addressing food insecurity.
“President Trump is standing with America’s farmers, especially right now while the farm economy recovers from years of neglect under the last administration,” said Secretary Rollins. “Certain commodities are experiencing a surplus, and USDA is ensuring these crops do not go to waste. Instead, they will reach Americans in need across the country. These fresh fruits will not only provide healthier options for families at food banks but also support American farmers facing unfair actions from foreign competitors.”
Agricultural Marketing Service Section 32 Purchases
The USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) plays a pivotal role in supporting domestic agriculture through Section 32 purchases. These purchases, known as “USDA Foods,” are distributed through the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) programs, including The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP). These programs form a critical part of the nation’s food safety net, ensuring that surplus agricultural products are redirected to communities in need.
As part of this $30 million initiative, USDA AMS will purchase the following fresh fruits:
- Fresh Oranges: $15 million
- Grapefruit: $10 million
- Mandarins: $5 million
These purchases will provide a much-needed boost to American farmers while ensuring that nutritious, fresh produce reaches food banks and nutrition programs nationwide.
A Win for Farmers and Families
This announcement comes at a time when many American farmers are grappling with surplus crops and economic challenges. By redirecting these surplus commodities to food assistance programs, the USDA is addressing two critical issues: supporting the agricultural economy and improving access to fresh, healthy food for families in need.
The Trump Administration’s focus on rural prosperity and food security is evident in this initiative, which not only strengthens the agricultural sector but also reinforces the nation’s commitment to combating hunger and malnutrition.
As Secretary Rollins emphasized, “This action ensures that American farmers are supported, rural communities are strengthened, and families across the country have access to healthier food options. It’s a win-win for everyone.”
