The WNBA season is approaching, and stars will be competing for a championship. Winning a championship is hard work, and it requires the best out of stars as they try to lead their teams to victory. The Most Valuable Player (MVP) award highlights those players, and last year, Las Vegas Aces star A’ja Wilson won it. This year, she has another shot at winning it. However, there will be some competition. With that said, here are five players who could take home the MVP award this year.

1.) A’ja Wilson

Wilson remains the top candidate, and if she wins this year, she will have her fifth. Last season, the Aces star averaged 23.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.3 blocks and 1.6 steals. The Aces were having their share of ups and downs, but Wilson’s play helped the team win another championship.

The seven-time WNBA All-Star is adding to her legacy, and there is a strong chance she wins another MVP.

2.) Napheesa Collier

Napheesa Collier finished second in last year’s MVP race, and with the way the Minnesota Lynx played last season, she had a good shot. Collier averaged 22.9 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.5 blocks. Like Wilson, the Lynx star impacts both ends of the floor. She does it effortlessly, and she makes the Lynx a contender every season. After losing to the Phoenix Mercury in their second playoff matchup, Collier and her teammates will look to redeem themselves. If she plays at a high level, she could not only win MVP, but a championship could be within reach as well.

3.) Alyssa Thomas

Alyssa Thomas has been an MVP candidate in the past, and in 2025, she finished third. She joined the Mercury last year, and like always, she helped her team in a myriad of ways. Thomas can get her points, she can rebound and she gets her teammates involved. So much so, she led the league in assists per game. Overall, Thomas averaged 15.4 points, 9.2 assists, 8.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals.

The Mercury forward helped her team reach the WNBA Finals, and that was the franchise’s sixth appearance. If she plays like she did last season, and has her share of triple-doubles, the Mercury could return to the big stage.

4.) Nneka Ogwumike

Nneka Ogwumike is no stranger to the MVP award. She won it in 2016, which was the year the Los Angeles Sparks won their third championship. During that time, Ogumike averaged 19.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 1.2 steals and 1.1 blocks. In 2025, she had another good year, as she averaged 18.3 points, seven rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals. She helped the Seattle Storm make the playoffs for the second year in a row, and regardless of where she plays this year, she will make an impact.

5.) Kelsey Mitchell

Kelsey Mitchell had an impressive year for the Indiana Fever, and she helped them go on a nice playoff run. They beat the Atlanta Dream, but they lost to the Aces after that. Mitchell averaged a career-high 20.2 points, 3.4 assists and 1.8 rebounds. She had a strong season, and if Indiana wants to go on an even better run, the team will need her efforts.

All of these players are stars, and their names will come up throughout the season.
