Pam McElvane discusses her holistic daily reset for staying grounded.

Holistic daily reset for spirit, mind, and body wellness

When I hear the word “reset” these days, I don’t think “start over.” I think return.

  • Return to what centers you.
  • Return to what strengthens you.
  • Return to what makes you steady enough to handle whatever the day throws your way—without breaking stride.

In today’s fast-paced world, we’re not just managing days; we’re managing speedchange, and the unexpected. So, when I say “reset,” I’m really asking:

  • How do you start your day?
  • How do you plan your week?
  • How do you stay ready to pivot without losing your balance?

And if life does make you sweat, do you have a reset to return to?

The Power of a Reset

This question has been on my mind for a while, especially as I’ve hosted The Inclusive Voice radio show on Chicago Progressive Talk WCPT 820 AM for five years. That’s five years of conversations, listening, and witnessing what people carry.

Through these conversations, I started asking guests—and even people in my personal life—how they stay well: mentally, physically, and spiritually.

The answers revealed a pattern:

  • Mental resets: “I meditate.” “I journal.” “I protect my peace.”
  • Physical resets: “I walk.” “I work out.” “I stretch.”
  • Spiritual resets: Faith, prayer, music, nature, stillness, or community.

The language varied, but the message was clear: people who thrive have something they return to.

That “return” is the reset.

My Non-Negotiable Daily Reset

As I’ve grown older—and, let’s be honest, more protective of my energy—I’ve created a non-negotiable daily reset.

Why non-negotiable? Because too many of us treat wellness like a luxury. We think we’ll get to it after the work is done, the kids are handled, or the emails are answered.

Here’s the truth: the day is not going to calm down.

You have to calm yourself down. You have to build something strong enough to hold you steady. And for me, that reset is holistic—spirit, mind, and body.

Spirit: Morning Devotion

Every morning, I start with prayer, song, and scripture. This is my foundation. It’s where I remember who I am and whose I am. On heavy days, this practice helps me put my feet on the floor and face the day with courage and perspective.

Body: Planned Movement

Movement is non-negotiable. For me, it’s a planned workout—scheduled and accounted for. My body keeps receipts, and if I ignore it, I pay the price with stiffness, fatigue, and stress. Movement clears the fog, changes my chemistry, and reminds me I’m alive.

Mind: Meditation

Mental wellness isn’t just “thinking positive.” It’s training your mind to pause, breathe, and release what you don’t need to carry. Meditation helps me stop reacting like everything is an emergency and respond with clarity and calm.

Adapting Your Reset Over Time

My reset today looks different than it did years ago. Back then, it was tennis—two hours a day, every day. It gave me discipline, community, and joy.

Now, my reset is more frequent and holistic because life is fuller, responsibilities are heavier, and the world is faster.

Sometimes, I need a midday reset:

  • A whispered prayer in the car.
  • A stretch break between meetings.
  • A short walk around the block.
  • A moment of stillness before walking into my house, so I don’t bring the day’s stress home.

Reset Means You’re Paying Attention

Some people think needing a reset means you’ve failed. That’s not true.

  • Reset means you’re paying attention.
  • Reset means you’re choosing yourself on purpose.
  • Reset means you’re refusing to live on empty.

Your Action Plan: Build Your Reset Today

Here’s a simple exercise to create your own reset—no pressure, no perfection.

  1. Write down your three-part reset:
    • Spirit: What connects you to meaning? (e.g., prayer, music, nature, gratitude)
    • Mind: What clears your mental clutter? (e.g., journaling, meditation, silence)
    • Body: What moves you physically? (e.g., walking, yoga, dancing)
  2. Make it non-negotiable for seven days.
Start small—10 minutes per category is enough. Consistency beats intensity every time.
  3. Create a midday reset plan.
Decide now: when your day goes sideways, what’s your reset? A quick prayer? A lap around the building? Two minutes of breathing?

Final Thoughts

Your reset doesn’t have to look like mine, but you do need one. In a world that keeps shifting, the people who stay standing aren’t the ones who never get knocked off balance. They’re the ones who know how to return.

That’s the reset.
