On The Come Up, is a heartfelt story that everyone can love. The story centers around 16-year-old Bri, who is striving to be one of the greatest rappers of all time. She is the daughter of an underground rap legend who died right before he made it big. As Bri sets out to fill her deceased father’s massive shoes, she is labeled a troublemaker at school. The problems pour on after her mom loses her job and they are in danger of being evicted. Bri faces controversies from all over, So she feels it’s a must that she makes it as a rapper.
Bri pours her anger and frustration into her first song, which goes viral, but for all the wrong reasons. Bri soon finds herself at the center of controversy by the media as more of a hoodlum than an emcee. The film is special because award-winning actress Sanaa Lathan is making her feature directorial debut. The film is written by Angie Thomas and has a great cast starring Jamila C. Gray, Da’Vine Joy Randolph, Mike Epps, and Method Man.
This film is insightful and full of heart, a powerful film that deals with struggle, triumph, and determination. This story is about fighting for your dreams, even when the odds are stacked against you.
