The year is coming down to the wire and there are multiple films slated to be released in the next quarter. Still, there hasn’t been any films more anticipated by audiences than the new film The Woman King.
This film is inspired by true historical events that happened in The Kingdom of Dahomey. The premise of the film is about a West African kingdom that existed from around 1600 until 1904 within present-day Benin – Nanisca played by award-winning lead actor Viola Davis, is the leader of an all-female military unit, and Nawi played by Thuso Mbedu is her newest ambitious recruit. Together, Nanisca and Nawi confront and fight the enemies who have dared to breach their Kingdom, enslaved their citizens, and threatened to destroy everything they have built over time.
The trailer is action-packed and will keep you on the edge of your seat. The stellar ensemble of actors also includes Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Adrienne Warren, Shelia Atim, Jayme Lawson, and Hero Fiennes Tiffin. The film is directed by award-winning director Gina Prince-Bythewood. Dahomey was one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. There is so much exciting buzz around this film that moviegoers are counting down the days for this epic release. Viola Davis took to social media and tweeted “I’m deeply honored and excited to bring this incredible story of these badass female warriors to life.”
The Woman King is slated to be released on September 16, 2022
