While much of the conversation around St. Louis often centers on the challenges our region faces, it’s equally important to recognize the progress taking place in our communities.
A recent walk through Harris-Stowe State University offered a reminder of that progress. Construction continues on the university’s new STEM Academic Building, while the campus library has also received significant upgrades, creating modern spaces designed to support learning, collaboration, and student success.
As St. Louis’ only Historically Black College and University (HBCU), Harris-Stowe occupies a unique and important place in the region’s educational landscape. For generations, the university has helped prepare students for careers in education, business, public service, healthcare, and countless other fields that strengthen our communities.
Investments in higher education extend beyond campus boundaries. They help attract students, create jobs, encourage research and innovation, and contribute to neighborhood and regional economic development. Every improvement to a university campus is ultimately an investment in the people who will shape our future.
At a time when headlines can often leave us discouraged, it’s worth taking a moment to acknowledge stories of growth and opportunity. Progress deserves attention, too.
As Harris-Stowe continues to evolve, these new facilities represent more than bricks and mortar. They symbolize a commitment to expanding opportunity for future generations and reaffirm the university’s enduring role in shaping St. Louis.
Sometimes the best stories aren’t about what went wrong they’re about the steady progress that reminds us what’s possible.
