At just 21 years old, Coco Gauff has a number of accolades. She won her first major singles title in 2023 when she defeated Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open. She became the first American teenager since Serena Williams to accomplish the feat. Now, Gauff has another major accolade under her belt, as she recently won the French Open. She is the first American woman to win since Williams to win this tournament.
Gauff reached the final by beating Madison Keys in the quarterfinals and Lois Boisson in the semifinals. She met Sabalenka, who is the No. 1 tennis player in the world, and despite losing the first set, Gauff fought through obstacles and took home the championship. She also won nearly $2.89 million. Her impressive win led to praise from people such as LeBron James, Barack and Michelle Obama, Billie Jean King and Carlos Alcaraz, who had a comeback of his own and won the French Open on the men’s side.
Gauff spoke on her win and her mindset during the match.
“I didn’t think honestly that I could do it,” Gauff said on the court. “But I’d like to quote American rap star Tyler the Creator, who said: ‘If I ever told you that I had a doubt inside me, I must be lying. I think I was lying to myself, because I could do it.
Gauff reached the finals of the French Open back in 2022, but she lost to Iga Świątek. She reached the quarterfinals and semifinals in 2023 and 2024 respectively. This time around, she came out victorious.
The future is bright for the young tennis star, and this win is yet another reminder of what she can accomplish.
